Douglas L. Smith, 71, Fargo passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo.
Doug was born July 12, 1948 in Rolette, North Dakota to Neil and Irene (Barker) Smith. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1966. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War from 1968-1970. He was honorably discharged in September of 1970 before returning to Fargo where he married Carol Roth on April 14, 1973 at High Prairie Lutheran Church, rural LaMoure, ND. They made their home in Fargo with their two children, Shawn and Erica. Carol passed away on July 10, 2012.
Doug started working at Stone Container in 1970, working his way to Plant Manager before retiring in 2012.
One of Doug’s passions was golfing, where he had several hole-in-one’s in his career. He loved to show and keep his corvettes as clean as possible, especially his 1966 Rally Red, convertible Stingray Corvette. He was also an avid bowler with a 200+ average and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He will be missed by those he leaves behind.
He is survived by his children; Shawn Smith, Fargo, ND, Erica (Brandon Salzbrun) Jodsaas, Fargo, ND; 2 grandchildren, Christina (Logan Kraft) Smith, Mya Jodsaas; sister, Linda (Curt) Blumhardt, West Fargo, ND, Gordon Smith, Rochert, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol and step-dad, Orville Olson.
A private live streamed service will take place on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Boulger Funeral Home & Celebration of Life Center, Fargo.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Craig and I are so sorry for your loss. Doug (and Carol) were great neighbors during these 40 plus years. We will remember Doug for his dedication to having a well manicured lawn and his appreciation of the flowers grown on the north side of the fence.

Very nice service to remember my cousin Doug. Wish I could have been there to support you all today. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers right now.
Thank you to the team at Boulger to allow those of us who couldn’t attend to pay respect to the family. Doug is my uncle. I have many fond memories of the Smith family. Doug gave me one of the items I keep in a personal safe, a 1958 Sandy Koufax baseball card. He had many amazing cards out one time when I was visiting in Fargo. He gifted me with that card and I have kept it since then. He was a big man with a big heart.
So sorry for your loss, Doug was great to work with, he always had a smile on his face and would help out whenever, you will be missed. Rest in Peace.
We will miss Doug and his sweet smile.
I shared some fun times with Doug years ago horseback riding. I can still remember how excited Doug was to have Carol and the kids come along to watch him ride.
Doug had an awesome personality and made us laugh all the time.
God bless all of you there at the beautiful service today, and those unable to attend. I pray God gives you comfort during this time.

I had the pleasure of working with Doug for all 42 years. Debbie still reminds me that Doug was the best dancer she ever danced with!
