Dr. Harold Spies

Dr. Harold Wade Spies, age 87, died on January 3, 2009 at Bethany Homes in Fargo, ND. Harold was born on March 25, 1921 in Alliance, OH to Arthur and Albertine (Stahl) Spies. He graduated from Alliance High School and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Union College in Alliance in 1942. Then he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1946. Harold married Sadie Compton on January 30, 1947 in Washington, D.C. He served in Korea in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1947-1949. He was Medical Superintendent of the Municipal Contagious Disease Hospital in Chicago, IL from 1953-1966. He then worked as Health and Safety Director of American Oil Company which later became Amoco Corporation where Harold retired from the position of Medical Director in 1988. Harold was the Clinical Associate professor of Preventative Medicine at the University of Illinois, School of Medicine and the author of numerous articles for professional journals in medicine. Memorials are preferred to organizations that help veterans or children. He is survived by his children: Jennifer Davis (Danny) Silver Creek, GA, Arthur Spies (Mary Jane) Ankeny, IA, Susan Reinhart (Roger) Walcott, ND, Harold Spies, Jr., Beaumont, TX; 6 grandchildren: Emily Mixon (Michael) Alabaster, AL, Sam Spies, Ankeny, IA, Sarah Spies, Omaha, NE, Kate Spies, Ankeny, IA, Amy Reinhart, Fargo, ND, Melissa Reinhart, Minot, ND; 2 great grandchildren: Lily and Alex Mixon, Alabaster, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Sadie; sister and brother-in-law: Winifred and Frank Lucas of Alliance, OH. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND with Visitation one hour before the service. Interment will be at a later date in Alliance, OH.
