Elizabeth Berg

Elizabeth Gette Berg, 93, lovingly known to her friends and family as Bette, passed from this life to the next on July 2, 2017 at Elim Care Center in Fargo, ND after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Her last days were spent surrounded by her family and under the care of the compassionate individuals employed at Elim and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Bette was born on September 11, 1923 to Ignatz and Elizabeth (Busz) Gette in Alsen, ND. She graduated from Starkweather High School in 1940. On February 15, 1945, she married Marvin Berg in Hot Springs, AK just before his term of service in the Army. When he returned, they made their home in North Dakota, living and raising their family in, Mandan, Washburn, and Bismarck. Bette spent 44 years of her life working as a tax preparer for H&R Block until she retired at the age of 85. Her years of service as a tax specialist allowed her to work with three generations of families; she was particularly fond of farm returns. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Ascension Parish in Bismarck from its inception; she continued to practice her faith while she was in the care of Elim and the priests who served there. In addition to her service to the church, Bette was an excellent seamstress and delighted in creating things for both her church community and her family. Her greatest joy was found spending time with her extensive family, particularly if there was a baby to hold and teach to say “Mama.” She will live on in the memories and hearts of her children and their families: her oldest son Robert Berg and his wife Sharon and her children Lukas, Yukon, and Jaclyn and Robert’s children including Mike & Kris Berg and their son Brady; David & Michelle Berg and their daughters Kaliya and Reyna; Lauren & Nick Mertens and their daughter Emilia, and Jameson Berg. She is also survived by her son Richard Berg and his wife Nancy and their children Sarah & Josh Deutsch and their children Holden, Bergen and Georgia; Emily & Shane Raveling and their children Mason, Dylan, Hayden and Rowyn; Adam & Leah Berg and their children Camden and Charlie. Bette’s oldest daughter Marvis Doster and her daughters: Beth Doster and her children Gabriel and Taura; and Amanda & Assan Njie and their son Malik. Bette’s youngest daughter Stephanie and her husband Mark Butz and their children Jenny & Karl Heustis and their children Mason, Kain, and Halley; and Matt & Niki Butz and their children Elijah, Katie, and Carson. She is also survived by her brother Bill and his wife Sonja Gette and her brother Leo and his wife Ruby as well as many nieces and nephews throughout the United States. During her time at Elim, she made a special friend, Julia, who will also miss her dear friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her twin daughters, and her siblings Malior, Henry, Joseph, Donald, Alvina, Marie, and Leona. A mass celebrating Bette’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, July 6 at Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church in Fargo, ND. A vigil will be held at Boulger Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:00 P.M with visitation starting at 6:00 P.M. Bette will be buried at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Starkweather, ND on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. The family would like to thank all the caring staff members at Elim Care and the Hospice of the Red River Valley who dedicate their lives to helping people with such great compassion. We ask that any memorials in Bette’s honor be sent to the Hospice of the Red River Valley so they may continue the work they do for families in their time of need.
