Obituary

A recording of the funeral service is available below:

Evelyn C. Swanson, 91, passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022, in Ecumen Evergreens of Fargo.

Evelyn Clarice Midstokke was born on January 23rd, 1930, in Calvin, ND, to Norwegian immigrant Olaus H. and Emma Borgen Midstokke, the last of seven children. She lived in early childhood in Hannah, ND. In the fall of 1937, the family moved to Moraine Township, then to Elm Grove Township, by McCanna, ND. She attended Larimore High School.

In 1947, Evelyn was united in marriage to Carnell Swanson, known as Carney, son of Carl and Nellie Swanson, rural Larimore, ND. Together they raised five children and lived on a farm west of Larimore. She was a long-time member of Elm Grove Church, McCanna. In 2004, when Carney died, Evelyn remained on the farm where she was very active with her gardening- even lawn-mowing. She moved to Good Samaritan Home, Larimore, in 2016, then to Ecumen Evergreens of Fargo in 2018.

She was preceded in death by all her siblings, Hazel Suelter, Kenneth, Oliver, Gilman, Raymond, and Gordon Midstokke; her husband Carney; her sons Wallace and Wayne Swanson, and an infant granddaughter.

Surviving are her daughters, Karen (Robert) Slusher of Fargo, Ruth (Allen) Peterson of Niagara, and Cindy Gustavson (Gordy Danner) of rural Larimore; her sister-in-law Gloria Temple of Larimore; as well as eleven grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley and Ecumen Evergreens of Fargo, for all of the loving care they provided to Evelyn.

Evelyn was always a very upbeat person and enjoyable to be around. She was a hard working farm wife,
mother and all the things that go along with that.
Always enjoyed stopping visiting and having coffee with her and Carney.
She will be greatly missed by all.

    A very sweet Aunt .

  3. Dick & Kathi Gilmore says:

Evelyn was a gentle woman. I only knew her for a few years…we were introduced at a Thanksgiving dinner and I liked her immediately! I would asked after her whenever I saw Karen. I had hoped Evelyn and I would be able to visit occasionally, but COVID prevented that. She’s was a woman who lived a good life, loved her family, and who served God. She put a smile on my face the day we met……and it’s still there!

My great aunt Evelyn was my last link to my Grandpa Oliver (her brother). I always enjoyed her stories, kind words, loving and jolly laugh and just her spirit. She will be missed greatly, and I look forward to seeing her again in heaven. Until then I will hold onto my memories of you Aunt Evelyn.
    Love,

Very nice service. Sorry we were unable to get there but being able to watch on-line was just like us being there.

Karen, Ruth & Cindy, thank you for the giggles from stories of Grandma. Evelyn was a kind soul and always so welcoming to us when we would stop by to see her.

My siblings and myself visited at the Swanson farm many times. Betsy Carlson and myself are the only ones left. Listening to the service on my computer was so comforting and it was a beautiful celebration of her life. My mom was Ida Borgen Kvaal. Betsy still lives in Fargo . I live in Roseau,MN. My sympathy to all the families of Evelyn Cornell.

Such a sweet, kind person. As young kids we spent hours with Evelyn and family. She always had treats for us. We loved going to “Swansons”. (We were there all the time!). She will be missed. Prayers are sent to family.
