Gladys Husebye, 94, formerly of Kindred, ND, died at Manor Care Health System, Fargo, ND on Thursday, May 18, 2006. Gladys was born October 13, 1911, in Trotters, North Dakota on the family homestead to Asa and Mathilda (Berkley) Stevens. Later the family moved to Barrie Township near Kindred, ND. Gladys attended the Barrie Country School for 8 years. She remembers her father hitching up the team of horses in the winter to take her and her brother Walter and sister Bernice to school. Gladys remembers the heavy horse hair blankets that kept them warm. She also remembers the teacher shoveling coal into the pot bellied stove to heat the school. Of course in the fall and spring they had to walk the distance. Just think now a days the big yellow bus picks up children at their front door and delivers them to the school. Gladys attended high school in Kindred and Christine, ND. In order to do this she had to stay in town with family friends. Gladys and Howard were married on March 29, 1933. They had two children, Leo and Beulah. Gladys and Howard farmed in the Kindred area for many years. Her cooking and baking was second to none. When the city cousin wanted a good home cooked meal they made a trip to the Husebye Farm. Up until about five years ago, she still kept several households supplied with cookies. The Norman Lutheran Church made a quilt with a square for every member. Her square says "Gladys H. The Cookie Grandma". On June 3, 1949 Howard passed away at the age of 42. Gladys was then the single parent left to support the family. This meant leaving the farm and moving into Kindred and finding a job. She went to work at the local Department Store as a Clerk. She worked at the same store under two different owners for 26 years. She walked the 4 or 5 blocks through snow, sleet and rain and was never late for work. Beulah remembers her not getting home on Christmas Eve until late because she was busy wrapping gifts for customers. The rest of Gladys? life evolves around her family. She has 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. She loved baby sitting when she wasn?t working and was always very active in her church as President of the Ladies Aid, Sunday School Superintendent and wherever she was needed. Music has always been a big part of Gladys? life. She used to sing with her Dad, brother Walter and sister Bernice at many community functions and in church. The Bell Choir at Manor Care gave her a chance to continue her love of music. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Beulah Rustad, Kindred, ND, son Leo (JoAnne) Husebye, Bismarck, ND, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 4 great, great grandchilden.
