Gonzalo Rojas-Cifuentes, 56, Fargo, ND passed away Monday, October 22, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family and friends under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Gonzalo was born September 1, 1962 in Santiago, Chile to Osvaldo Rojas-Cuadras and Marta Cifuentes-Briceño. He graduated from the University of Chile in 1992 with a degree in Agronomy. Soon after his marriage to Viviana, they moved to Fargo, ND where he received his PhD in Plant Science at NDSU in 2001, specializing in potato breeding. Between 2001 and 2009 he worked with the NDSU dry bean breeding program. He then worked for many years with the NDSU foundation seed stocks program where he served as Assistant Director. Part of his job was to inspect and ensure the quality of seed stock varieties produced by NDSU plant breeding programs. His work allowed him to travel throughout the world to many countries, including a US AID project in Guinea. Traveling was truly one of his passions.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June, 2018. He is survived by Viviana, his wife of 25 years, Fargo, ND, his brother, Claudio Rojas, Puerto Varas, Chile, his sister, Loreto Rojas, Puerto Varas, Chile, four nieces and nephews, Claudio, Loreto, Francisco and Magdalena and, godson Ricardo Rivera, and grandnephews Rafael and Diego and grandniece Rocio, and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Osvaldo and Marta and sister, Marcela Rojas.
Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo with visitation starting at 1:00 P.M.
A Celebration of Gonzalo’s life will take place following the service in the church social hall.
Gonzalo will be remembered by his friends and family for his kind and generous heart, gentle spirit and easy smile. He will be deeply missed.
