Helen T Koering, 82, Hillsboro, N.D., died peacefully Wednesday, July 30th, 2003 at the Hillsboro Nursing Home with family at her side. Helen Theresa Halverson was born on March 19, 1921, Hillsboro, North Dakota, to Theadore and Ida (Miller) Halvorson. She grew up on the family farm south of town with her brother Kenneth. She graduated from Hillsboro High School and went on to pursue a business career at Interstate Business College in Fargo. Helen returned to her hometown where she worked at the Traill County Courthouse during World War Two. One of her many jobs was handing out gas ration cards. Helen married Ervin Koering on December 6, 1946 in Hillsboro. Together, they farmed northwest of town on the Koering family farm. They specialized in award-winning dairy cattle, small grains, and later sugar beets. She worked side by side Ervin, no matter what the job. She was an expert at washing milkers, driving beet and grain trucks, raising animals, keeping a house, tending a garden and washing clothes. She was an excellent partner on the farm, as well as in life. Helen was especially known for her signature hairstyle, chokecherry jelly, milk gravy and meatballs, and the best fried egg sandwiches ever to grace a lunchbox. She was active in the Congregational Church and later the Hillsboro United Parish. One of her favorite activities was going to Craft Days in preparation for the annual church bazaar. Helen was always ready to help her family and friends. She was a 4-H leader for many years. She never forgot to send a birthday, anniversary card, or a "just thinking of you" card. Helen always visited people in the hospital and the nursing home. She was a strong , courageous woman who lost her long battle against cancer but won the battle of life. Helen is survived by her 5 children; two sons, James (Susan) Koering, Littleton, Colorado, Wayne (Pam) Koering, Hillsboro; three daughters, Colleen (Darrel) Weick, West Fargo, Ann Warner, Wabasso, Minnesota, and Tessa (Brad) Sather, Fargo, 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandsons, and her brother, Kenneth (Dorothy) Halvorson, Hillsboro. Helen was proceeded in death by her husband, Ervin, and son-in-law, Michael Warner. Visitation: Friday, August 1st, from 5 to 7 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Hillsboro United Parish Church.
