Irene Nelson

November 22, 2019

Irene passed away on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Bethany on University in Fargo, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 90.

Irene Juliet Graff was born on January 24, 1929 to Albert and Gertrude (Bjorgon) Graff. She grew up in rural Kindred and received her education at the Riverside School. Irene was united in marriage to Wesley Nelson on October 16, 1948 at the Gol Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm near Kindred until 1958 when they moved into Kindred and raised their family.

Irene was a talented seamstress, making clothes for her family, friends, and community members. She also loved quilting, bowling, archery, cards, and trips to the casino with her husband. More than anything, Irene loved her family. It was always a highlight when she could attend the athletic and musical events of her grandkids. She never missed an opportunity to spend time with her loved ones.

Irene is survived by her husband, Wesley of Fargo; her children – Gail (Darrell) Discher of Davenport, ND; Sandy (Wayne) Reese of Laurel, MT; Kevin (Jose Lopez Castillo) Nelson of Lynnwood, WA; her five granddaughters – Kristin (Darren) Hoyme, Jennifer (Dale) Sitzman, Melissa (Travis Trapp) Discher, Tricia (Keith) O’Neil, Amanda (Dominic) Froemke; and nine very special great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings – Aagot Hansen, Evelyn (Morrie) Wirth, Doris Alverson, Corrine Nygaard, and Marlene Bergquist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Michael Reese; and her siblings – Garnet Floberg, Beatrice Mortenson, and Gordon Graff.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany on University for the loving care she received for the past 6 years.

Sincere condolences for your loss. We pray that you will find comfort in the many beautiful memories of a beautiful human being. My most endearing memory of Aunt Irene is that she had a wonderful sense of humor always finding the brighter side of any situation. We should take great comfort in knowing that she loved Jesus and she is now with him. We will miss you Aunt Irene!

She was a very talented lady and I still make her cookies which on the recipe card it is labeled Irene’s cookies.

    Dear Wesley,
I don’t know if you will remember my name; you knew me more face-to-face. I recently worked at the front desk at Bethany and you and I had some very special and precious conversations over the past couple of years as you struggled with adjusting to Irene’s illness. Sometimes I baked you a loaf of Banana Bread, knowing that you missed Irene’s cooking; or I borrowed you a book – anything I could think of to help make the days go easier for you. I know you will miss seeing Irene every day and I will keep you and your family in my prayers and you adjust to each new change in your life.
