Jeffrey Carl Nelson passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017 at his home in Moorhead, MN, surrounded by his loving family.
Jeff was born on October 6, 1958, the son of Kenten and Margaret (Tharalson) Nelson in Hillsboro, ND. He grew up on the family farm near Hillsboro. Following graduation from Hillsboro High School he attended UND where he majored in Psychology. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Jeff worked in the mental health area, with his most recent position being a case worker for the homeless in Fargo. In later years, he worked for area farmers driving truck and tractor helping with field work.
A talented photographer of nature, he liked to travel and camp to get many of his special shots. He also shared thousands of sports photos with friends. He enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing numerous pieces appreciated by family members.
Jeff is survived by his mother, Margaret Nelson of Hillsboro/Mayville, ND; his brother, Dale (Kathy) Nelson of Detroit Lakes, MN; his sister, Renee (Jim) Sobolik of Mayville, ND; and his very special nieces and nephews – Austin Nelson, Erica Nelson, Nathan (Elisa) Sobolik, Ana (Travis) Amb, and Lauren Sobolik. Also surviving is one great-niece, Raegan Sobolik.
Preceding him in death was his father, Kenten; and longtime companion, his dog, Adak.

So sorry to hear of Jeff’s passing. He was a neighbor of ours and would always stop by and chat a bit when he would pass by on a daily bike ride or a walk with his dog Adak. He was sure to let you know if we had extra furry friends wandering around as he always kept an eye on the Neighborhood. Jeff will be greatly missed.
Your gentle nature will be missed in the neighborhood Jeff, rest in peace friend.
It was so beautiful to see many of Jeff’s photographs on display at the church. He took pride in his photography! We will miss him so much as anytime we had the garage door open or were in the driveway washing the car or motorcycle, he would walk over to visit with us. I’m so glad we became friends with him when we moved into the neighborhood five years ago.
Jeff was a wonderful neighbor and friend. Even after moving from the neighborhood we would get together once in awhile for coffee or lunch just to catch up. My kids and I will always remember Jeff and Adak walking, no matter the weather. We enjoyed seeing the pictures he took of the kids and their sports or his many nature pictures. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace my friend.
Dale and family, I am saddened to learn of Jeff’s death. Keep his memory alive in stories you tell. Remembering you in prayer.
I remember Jeff from UND–when I was a grad student and he was an undergraduate. He was very genuine, very nice, an all around helpful and good person.
