Jerome Donald Howland, Jr., 64, of Grafton, ND, died Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fargo.

Jerome was born on December 29, 1945 in Fort Dodge, IA to Jerome and Mary (Smolack) Howland.  He grew up in Hallock, MN and graduated from Hallock High School.  He served as a Navy Medic stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War.  Following his military service, he returned to North Dakota and married Catherine Marie Crawford on November 23, 1973 at Assumption Catholic Church in Pembina, ND.  They lived in Grafton, Adams, ND and then moved back to Grafton.  Jerome worked for several different companies including Robertson Lumber, Cenex and the State Developmental Center.  He also received his Associate's Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

Jerome enjoyed fishing, coin collecting, baking, watching movies and especially loved spending time with his family and friends and was known a great story teller.  He also had a great interest in US history, particularly in WWII and John F. Kennedy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; parents and step-father, Einar Lind.

Jerome is survived by his children, Dawn Marie Howland of Grafton, Denise Irene (Thomas) Lee of Fargo, Michael David (Angela Gunderson) Howland of Willmar, MN, Diane Renae Howland of Grafton, Matthew Jerome Howland of Grafton; brother, Jerald (Beverly) Howland of Apple Valley, MN; sister, Mary Lou (Marvin) Cleem of Cowarts, AL; brother, James (Deborah) Howland of Moorhead, MN and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

  1. Sorry to hear about Jerome, I have not seen him for many years, but I do remember the days in Hallock living 2 blocks away from all of you kids. Jerome was a close friend of my brother Tim during thier growing up days…God Bless Jerome’s family as you go through this time of mourning.

  2. Jerome was a nice man, always looking out for his kids. I know that he will be deeply messed by his family and friends, but especially by his children.
