Joan Svaleson

March 14, 1935 - July 16, 2020

Joan passed away on July 16, 2020 at Eventide in Fargo at the age of 85.

Joan Mary Alice Reinan was born on March 14, 1935, the daughter of Milton and Alice (Stockmoe) Reinan in Traill County, North Dakota. She grew up in the Blanchard, North Dakota area and attended school in Hunter, where she graduated from High School. Joan then attended Interstate Business College in Fargo. She was united in marriage to Asa Sherritt Jr. in 1955, and their daughter, Cindy was born to this union. Asa passed away in 1956 from injuries sustained in a farm accident.

In 1958 Joan married Merton Svaleson. Their daughter Shawn and son Jay were born to this union. They made their home in Hillsboro where they raised their family. She worked for many years at the Traill County Conservation Office and also for the Traill County Water Board until her retirement. Joan was a longtime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was active throughout the community – she loved Hillsboro, the activities, the people, and all of her friends. Joan was very proud of her grandchildren and loved spending time with her children and their families. Joan has made her home at Eventide in Fargo since 2017.

Joan is survived by her children – Cindy (Keith) Burck of Fargo; Shawn (John) Fugleberg of Jamestown, ND; and Jay (Darcy) Svaleson of Fargo; her grandchildren – Asa (Jen) Burck, Allison (Tom) Lybeck, Siri (Andrew Bjornson) Burck, Eric (Erin) Fugleberg, Laura (Dereck Mattson) Fugleberg, Josh (Marissa) Svaleson and Kirsten Svaleson; and her very special 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters, Carol Brungardt, and Linda (Roger) Erickson, numerous nieces and nephews and many other very dear relatives.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Asa Sherritt Jr.; her husband, Merton Svaleson; her brother, Jerry Reinan, and her brother-in-law Bob Brungardt.
