On September 10, 2019, June Westerberg, 97 years young, left Rosewood on Broadway to go to her heavenly home to be reunited with the love of her life, Walt, as she listened to her dear Pastor Matt sing Amazing Grace.
June Huebner was born at home on June 21, 1922, to William A. Huebner and Esther (Nelson) Huebner in Minneapolis, MN. Due to the country’s state of depression, the Huebner family moved from St. Paul, to Austin, MN, to Minneapolis, to farmsteads near Hawley and then to Glyndon. She attended high school in Glyndon, MN where she was on the “Yell Squad” (cheerleading). She loved learning and loved school. Glyndon was where she met Walter Westerberg and knew at first sight that he was “the one”. Walt and June were united in marriage by Rev. Roy Harrisville, of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN, on October 22, 1939. In May of 1945, Walt and June were confirmed together in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Harrisville and became members of Trinity. Purchasing a larger home for their growing family in north Fargo, they joined Messiah Lutheran Church on October 3, 1954. When her children were young, June was a dedicated Sunday School teacher for many years. In later years, June stayed active in her church by co-chairing the funeral committee and later joining the Messiah quilters and Rachel Circle. Being a part of these church groups fostered many lifelong friendships she held so dear to her heart.
June was a wonderful, caring wife and mother, making her home a warm and welcoming haven to family and friends. She spent late night hours at her sewing machine putting her creative seamstress skills to work making clothes for her children, while Walt was working the graveyard shift. One of her creative releases was feeding her family, always keeping in mind that a rainbow on your plate meant a balanced meal. She had a deep love of poetry and could recite many poems that she had memorized as a child, teaching them to her children and grandchildren. She also spent countless hours teaching them jacks, Fox and Goose in the snow, hopscotch, jump rope and one- two- three, O’Leary and challenging them to foot races, usually coming out the winner!
As her family grew independent she had the opportunity to go to work at NDSU Extension Service as a grain market information clerk. She loved the work as it afforded her the opportunity to learn new and different skills. After retirement, June and Walt enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends and new places.
June is survived by her five children, Janice Harris, New Brighton, MN, Wanda Weiser, Hackensack, MN, Marjeanie Hanson (Phil) Fremont, NE, Susan (Randy) Eider, Fargo, and Tim (Annie) Westerberg, Fargo. Youngest brother, John (Peggy) Huebner, Alexandria, MN, sister-in-law Dolores Huebner, Washington, D.C., 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. June was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Walter Westerberg, her parents, her siblings Berdelle Kragnes, Wayne Huebner, Maggie Ekanger, Bill Huebner, Betty Bishop and Esther Horner.
