Kermit J. Peterson, Fargo, North Dakota, formerly of Osakis, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, at the age of 87. Kermit J. Peterson was born July 12, 1915 in Stanchfield, Minnesota, where he attended school and grew into manhood. Kermit was the son of Victor and Charlotte Peterson. In April 1941 he enlisted in the United States Army and served during WWII. Kermit was in the 175th Field Artillery Battalion, 34th 105 MN Infantry Division for four and one half years in England, Italy and North Africa. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on July 3, 1945. After the war he lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota and on September 7, 1946, he married Veloura Busch at Princeton, Minnesota. In February 1947, he was employed with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a Refuge Patrolman at Waskish and Thief Lake, Minnesota and later as a Conservation Officer. In 1953 he and his family moved to Long Lake, Minnesota and in 1956 he moved to Osakis, Minnesota, where he was a Conservation Officer until his retirement in March 1975. After retirement, Kermit found many hobbies to keep him busy. He loved the outdoors and nature and spent many enjoyable hours fir trapping, and collecting and displaying Indian Artifacts. Throughout the years, Kermit gave many informational talks to various community groups about his collections. Kermit enjoyed reading about history and was a lifetime member of the Douglas County Historical Society. He was also a member of the Osakis VFW, Osakis Heritage Center, Osakis Sportsmans Club, and the First Presbyterian Church in Osakis. He enjoyed doing many family activities, especially with his two grandchildren. Kermit enjoyed going on camping trips and he was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. He was loved very much and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veloura, his parents, and his brother, Woodrow Peterson. He is survived by his daughter, Gloria Peterson, Dilworth, MN, his granddaughter, Juli (David) Munro, Fargo, ND, his grandson, Jeffrey (Stacia) Johanson, Spicer, MN, his great-granddaughter, Madisen Johanson, his sister, Jeanette Olson, Cambridge, MN, two nieces and one nephew. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 17, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church in Osakis, Minnesota. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Osakis, Minnesota.
