Lillian passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Lillian Smette was born on October 29, 1923, the daughter of Lars and Bertha (Herbeck) Smette, in Traill County, ND. She grew up on the family farm near Buxton, ND and received her education attending country schools. She was baptized, confirmed and was a life-long member at her beloved Highland Church. Lillian was united in marriage to Wallace W. Ludwig on October 7, 1967 at Highland Lutheran Church near Cummings, ND. After their marriage, they made their home in Hillsboro. Wally passed away on February 24, 1973. Lillian lived in her home in Hillsboro for many years, until recently making her new home at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home since November of 2014. Throughout the years, Lillian took great pride in her yard and flowers (they always seemed to be in bloom). She was well known in the community for all of her Christmas baking – especially her lefsa. She kept busy with many different crafts and crocheting – and gifted many doilies and afghans to her family and friends. She was very active in the Buxton Senior Citizens Center and Highland Lutheran Church, and loved spending her days keeping busy with crafts and listening to the Twins. Lillian worked at the Hillsboro Motel for a number of years, as well as did the cleaning at the Ohnstad-Twichell Law Firm in Hillsboro. She also cared for her parents in their later years. Lillian is survived by her nephew, Roger (Shellie) Smette of Cummings, ND; her niece-in-law, Alice Smette of Fargo; and her great niece and nephew, Carrie and Nathan. Also surviving are her other dear relatives, including nieces and nephews on the Ludwig side of family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wally; her brothers – Harvey (Helen) Smette and Berdean (Lou) Smette; and her nephew, Mike Smette. Memorial Service: 2 PM Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Highland Lutheran Church near Cummings, ND. Gathering: one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: Highland Lutheran Church Cemetery.
