Lois Fankhanel

Lois Arlene Fankhanel, 89, of Hillsboro, ND, died Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Sanford Medical-Hillsboro Long-term Care Center.
Lois was born July 3, 1929 to Julia and Paul Fankhanel in Barnsville, MN. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1947, and continued her education at NDSU (NDAC) graduating in 1951 with a degree in Home Economics. Lois worked many years for Otter Tail Power Company in Fergus Falls, MN. Later in her working career she moved to Bismarck, ND where she worked at the Heartview Foundation, a private, non-profit alcohol/drug treatment and education program. Lois served as the Charter President for the Fergus Falls AAUW (American Association of University Women), an organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
She leaves behind three nieces: Bobbie Kaye (Jamie) Roemer of Burlington KY; Kathy Ebert of Fargo, ND; Nancy (Kerry) Rice of Buxton, ND; and five nephews: Paul Ebert (Rosemary) of Fargo, ND, Mark (Jaimie) Fankhanel of Bloomingdale, IL; Ric Fankhanel (Holly) Encinitas, CA; J. J. (Amy) Fankhanel of Moorhead MN; and Eric (Kelsey) Fankhanel of Grandin, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Julia Fankhanel, daughter Kerry Dolan; one sister, Dolores Ebert; three brothers: Earl, Julian and James; sister-in-law Joyce Fankhanel, brother-in-law Clarence Ebert, and one niece Lee Ann Fankhanel.
A family graveside service and burial will be held Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 3:30 PM in Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND.
Please direct memorials to the “Fankhanel Family Scholarship” (H-509). This scholarship was originally created in 2008 when Buster Fankhanel passed away. The fund has grown with subsequent memorials received with the passing of Joyce Fankhanel (2012) and Lee Ann Fankhanel (2013).

My Sympathy to you all. I worked with her when she was at Ottertail and I was at Cass County Electric Cooperative we both did the same thing and work together on projects in the area.
My sympathy to the family of Lois. I worked with her at Heartview and remember her with fondness as she was very supportive to me when I began working there. God Bless her and all of you.
I knew Lois for many years when she was a counselor at Heartview Foundation. She was a very compassionate and caring person. She gave 100% to her patients and many of them came back to Heartview reunions to see her. She was also a very giving person. We had a lot of good times together.
We remember Lois fondly. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.
Dear Lois, 50 years ago you tried to help my deeply troubled family when I was a teenager and my Dad went to Heartview for several months. At the time I had no idea about alcoholism and family dysfunction and that alcohol rehab facilities were in their infancy. For decades after that time, I was deeply affected by the effects of living with alcoholism and family dysfunction. In 2010 my life was changed forever when I crawled into ACA. Lois, it might take 50 years, but you began to crack me open all those years ago and I thank you dearly. It doesn’t not surprise me that your energy reached me today, just a few weeks after your death. We are surrounded by godsent angels always, of which you were one of mine. May you rest in peace.
