Margaret Alvilda (Trana) Fjelstad, 102, of Fargo, formerly Kindred, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Elim Care Center under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.  She was born on May 19, 1910 in Simcoe, ND to Ole J. and Sophia(Sollid) Trana.  She grew up on a farm that her father homesteaded.  She graduated from Granville High School in 1928.  Following high school, she attended Minot State Teachers College and received her Teachers Certificate.  Margaret taught for 5 years at various country schools.  On October 29, 1936 she married Joseph Fjelstad at the Stenkjaer Lutheran Church in Simcoe, ND and they remained married for 51 years, until his death in 1987.

Margaret was a very active woman, and participated in many organizations. She was very involved in Ladies Aid, Senior Citizens, and Birthday Club.  She had many hobbies including quilting, crocheting, gardening, and playing Bingo.  Margaret was the “hostess with the mostest” and loved caring for others.  She used this talent to make Christmas a very special time for her loved ones.  Margaret was always an optimist and able to remain calm and composed. She loved her grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed attending all of their special events.

She is survived by her children, Jerome (Carol) Fjelstad, Kindred, ND, Sandra (Orten) Brodshaug, Horace, ND, Gordon (Cheryl) Fjelstad, Kindred, ND, Darrel (Claudia) Fjelstad, Moorhead, MN; her grandchildren, Kari Casas, Diane Kjelstrup, Susanne Brodshaug, Shannon Wallwork, Heidi Brodshaug, Kristin McElmury, Hilary Sjostrom, Annette Nii, Jennifer Komorowski, Zachary Fjelstad, Sarah Atchison, and Gretchen Jilek; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

  4. It saddens me to see that sweet little Margaret passed away. She was at Elim Nursing Home where my mother also was for some time. We got to know Margaret over the years. We visited and I would bring my mom’s little dogs in to see mom and would stop in so Margaret could play with one of the dogs. She seemed to enjoy it so much. My sympathys to the whole family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this time. Hold on to your memeories. Take care. Sincerly, Julie Trzpuc

  5. It has been a number of years since I was a member of Norman Lutheran Church. But I will always remember Margaret’s wonderful smile and gentleness. She was truly a woman of God.
