Margaret Wasche

Margaret Fredrika Johnson Wasche was born to Wanda Gladys Cooper Johnson and (F.) Roy Johnson on the Wandaroy Farm, north of Casselton, ND, on June 2, 1923, in the upstairs bedroom where her Father and brothers were born. Her Father (after whom Johnson Hall at NDSU was named) began taking her to ND Agricultural College football games when she was ten. She was an avid Bison Booster and missed very few home games throughout her 94 years. She was also a basketball fan and attended mens and womens games whenever possible. She delighted in sponsoring athletic scholarships. Margaret graduated from Casselton High School in 1941. She was Senior Class President and received the American Legion Citizenship Award. She graduated from NDSU in 1945 with a B.S. Degree in Home Economics. Margaret received the Danforth Award for Outstanding Freshman in Home Economics and was the Leg Wrestling Champion at the Danforth Camp. She was President of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity, a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron (Home Economics Honorary) and was named a Representative Senior. Margaret was an Intramural Badminton Champion. She taught in Williston, ND, from 1945-1947 and in Albert Lea, MN, from 1947-1949. In 1949 Margaret married Peter Henry Wasche. They moved to Fargo in 1954 to form Wasche Farm Management, Inc. Margaret and Peter had three children: Wanda Wasche Heintzman (Dan); Roy P. Wasche (Connie Melhus Wasche); and Mary Wasche Zimmerman (Dan L. Zimmerman). Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren are: Amy Heintzman Blahosky (Patrick = Damian & Finnian); Mark Heintzman = Noah and Owen; Nick Wasche (Brenda Pederson = Lily and Quinn); Rachel Wasche Gregg (Kurt = Audra and Kinsley); Grant Wasche; Jay Zimmerman (Nikki Burkel Zimmerman = Olivia and Zach); Laura Zimmerman Bowles (Bear); and Matt Zimmerman. While raising her family, Margaret was a member of her Church Circle, frequent Chair of the Candy Booth at the Holy Spirit Bazaar, fifty-year member of the Mother Seaton Study Club, Room Mother, Blue Bird and Boy Scout Leader, member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Board, and board member at Catholic Family Services. For two years, Margaret was the 24-hour caregiver to her Mother. She was a billiards champion, a pool shark, and she taught any interested child how to throw a spiral. Margaret loved to play cards and specifically directed that her funeral not be on Duplicate Bridge Wednesday, She loved to play bridge with her best friend and longtime neighbor, Phyllis Melvey. Her hand knit sweaters, blankets, mittens, argyle socks, and scarves are treasured. She sewed clothing for herself and her family. She loved arranging flowers and kept little green vases of flowers everywhere. Margaret’s worn-down cowboy boots attest to her enjoyment of her horse, Blackie. She tamed a wild horse through feeding and gentle coaxing. Gathering the family for fun, food, and Pinochle was her major priority. Menus were planned around everyones favorites. She encouraged seconds on the meal and on the desserts. Grammy treated the entire family to many wonderful trips. We cannot count the times that she said with a smile, “How can I be so lucky to have all my children with me?” Margaret always had a treat for every child. Her Husband, Peter, died in 1994. She survived her four brothers: Frank Johnson (Mary Harmon = Jeff, Doug & Patty); Harry Johnson (Mary Johlfs = Cathy Dillon & Margie Jensen); Ralph Johnson (Alice Larson = Vicki, Lisa, Barbie Baumgartner & Ralph Douglas); and Roy Johnson, who told her that she was the best athlete in the family, (Louise Ouradnick = Nancy Jordheim, Roy C. & Chuck). A Memorial Service will held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fargo, ND, with visitation beginning at 10AM.
