Mearl H. Gifford, 95, Fargo passed away Thursday, September 9 in Bethany Homes, Fargo.

Mearl was raised on a farm near Kelso, N.D. He was born April 28, 1915 to A.C. and Nora Gifford. He graduated from Hillsboro High School and received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from NDSU in 1937.

In 1933 he married Leona Hage. After graduating from NDSU Leona and Mearl moved to Greensburg, PA for 10 years. Returning to North Dakota in 1947, he purchased a farm near Gardner. Mearl and Leona had 3 children, Arlene, Dixie Lee, and Robert. Leona passed away in 1957.

In 1959 Mearl married Evelyn (Sorum) Silver from Amenia, ND. Mearl and Evelyn lived on the family farm until his retirement in 1983.

Mearl was very active in the North Dakota Wheat Commission where he served for 10 years. He served for 6 years on the National Wheat Commission Board.

Mearl enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing bridge, and spending his winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his children, Dixie Lee Wadstrom, Houston  TX, Robert (Rosalyn) Gifford, Moorhead MN, and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, daughter, Arlene Badel, step-son, William (Bill) Silver.

  1. Boulder COWe’ll miss you grandpa!!! We’re glad that we were able to meet you this Labor Day weekend. The kids (Dmisa & Sid) still remember you. I told them you passed away and they said “he’s in heaven up in the clouds now”.

    May you rest in peace.
