Oscar Sathre

oscar sathre
Oscar was born to Norwegian immigrants, Hans and Kari Sathre, July 2, 1914 at Tuttle, ND. He attended country school and worked on the farm until his “Uncle Sam” offered him a job. As a member of the US Army in WWII, he saw action in New Guinea. It was there he was injured, almost losing his arm. He spent a year in Vancouver, Washington for medical attention. During that time he met the “love of his life”, Ellen Malmkar. Following his discharge they were married at Grant, Nebraska, June 16, 1946. They returned to Tuttle and spent nearly 50 years engaged in farming and ranching with Oscar’s brother, Lloyd. In 1995 they retired and moved to Fargo. Due to Ellen’s failing health, they moved to Pioneer House, Fargo in 2005. She passed away June, 2005. Oscar loved working the land and being outdoors. It was difficult for him to be confined to the city when they moved. He enjoyed reading about history, visiting with people, sharing stories about life and telling a joke or two with that twinkle in his eye! His sense of humor became his trademark. In later years, he thoroughly enjoyed his weekly visits from Leonard Thompson. He is survived by daughter Brenda (Ed) Kaeding, Forest Lake, MN; son, Kenneth, Fargo; grandsons, Michael Kaeding (fiancé, Alyssa Hansen), St. Paul, MN, Lucas Kaeding, Minneapolis, MN; sister, Hilda Morrow, Fargo and many, very supportive nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ellen; infant daughter; brothers, Helmer Sathre, Raymond Sathre , Lloyd Sathre; sisters Inga Kramer, Gladys Sannes.
