Phyllis Gludt, 79, West Fargo, ND passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Sanford Health in Fargo. Phyllis Ann Borg was born December 9, 1935 to Archie and Junice (Monson) Borg in Powers Lake, ND. Her dad said it was the coldest winter on record. Phyllis attended grade school in a one room school house in Lunds Valley, ND and graduated from High School in Stanley, ND. In 1949, when her mother died, the family’s lives were forever changed. They moved to Moscow, ID for one year before returning to Stanley. Phyllis worked for an abstract company, a busy business, as it was during the ND “50’s” oil boom. She met Francis (Tex) Gludt and they married on April 23, 1954 at the Catholic Church in Stanley, ND. They lived in Kenmare where Tex was employed by Northwestern Bell. They were transferred to Bismarck, ND where their first child Roberta was born. In 1955, they moved to Watford City. Four more children were born there, Pamela, Nicholas, Mary, and Patricia. Homemaking was a very important part of Phyllis’ life. She was a talented seamstress sewing many outfits for her four daughters. During their time in Watford City, Phyllis was active in the Epiphany Catholic Church. She was instrumental in starting the Mrs. Jaycees and later was the State Vice President. Phyllis met many wonderful friends while playing Bridge, which became her favorite hobby. Other hobbies she enjoyed included needlepoint, cross stitch, and hardanger. She made all her grandchildren personalized Christmas stockings. In 1966 Tex and Phyllis moved to Williston. There Phyllis became PTA President at Lewis & Clark School and a 4-H Leader. Tex was involved in the Lions Club and Phyllis was the chair of the women’s program for the district convention. She was active in Catholic Daughters and organized Women’s Cursillos. In 1979, Tex and Phyllis moved to Fargo where she worked at Holy Spirit Church for six years and the Chamber of Commerce for three years. After retiring, Tex & Phyllis traveled all over the world and spent winter months in Florida and Arizona. During her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at local hospitals beginning at St. John’s, then Dakota Heartland, and last Meritcare/Sanford. Her beloved husband of 59 years, Tex, passed away on December 9, 2013. Phyllis eloquently fought a battle with cancer for the past five years. She took pleasure in the small things such as her daily crossword puzzles, going to church, breakfast with friends, watching the Bison Football games, and her favorite of all, playing Bridge. 1. Phyllis was definitely a very special friend of our mother’s (Vi Stenehjem). They lived across the street from each other in Watford City for many years…the years when all of you kids were born and growing up…Phyllis’s personality delighted Mother and brought her lots of laughs. Phyllis, i know, thought of Mother as her second mother, a mentor, and a friend who always had time to listen. Of course! They played many hands of bridge but they also skated on the rink in your front yard. Do you remember? Once you kids were off to school, out came the skates and the two of them would skate and talk and laugh.
Speaking of kids, I remember our dad, Vince, telling stories about Nick and Nick not wanting to go to school. He would go to school and at some point just get up and go to the bank and sit at Dad’s desk. He’d had enough of school and Dad would have to figure out a way to get him back into the classroom without causing a big commotion…It didn’t happen just once. No. Many times that first year.
You were all so very special to my parents. Your parents were wonderful, wonderful friends of our parents…right up to the time of their very old age. Sending you love from our family to yours…These memories are priceless as were your mother and dad. Lynne Stenehjem Ebner

  5. Phyllis was a lovely lady. I enjoyed working with her at Holy Spirit Church between 1981 and 1983. She was fun, loving, bright, full of ideas. She loved her husband, Tex and her five children. We kept in touch over the years. I especially appreciated her thoughtfulness in attending my mother’s funeral at Holy Cross in 2013. May she now dine in the Kingdom of God.

  6. I would like to express my deepest sympathies for the Gludt family. We lived across the street from the Gludts in Williston in the 70’s. Phyllis and Tex are some of the nicest people we have ever known and they will be greatly missed.

  7. Patti and family – We are very sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. In reading her obituary it sounds like she lived a full and caring life the best way she could. Cherish the memories.

  8. To Nick and the rest of the Gludt family, we saddend by the loss of your Mom. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

  9. Sorry to her about your mother’s passing, Nick. She sounds like a wonderful woman and great mom. We learned about it when some good friends of ours, Tim Harris and Lori Reed, called a few days ago. Small world–we didn’t know that you and Tim were cousins. Please come back to Meadowlark Lane and visit us someday.

  10. Oh I’m so sorry to learn of Phyllis’ death. I so enjoyed her when she and Tex lived in Williston. She truly was a lady who lived her faith. I was fortunate to work with her at many functions at St. Joseph’s Church. She was one classy lady who so enjoyed having fun where she went. We shared many laughs at Church and playing bridge. Please accept my sincere sympathy. Tex must be so happy to once again be reunited with her. May she rest in peace.

  11. Phyllis was always a pleasant encounter in her work at Meritcare/Sanford. She will be missed by many.
I am sure she will find some good bridge players in heaven. Our love and sympathy to her family.

  12. My deepest condolences to everyone that was close to her. I was looking through the obituary list on this funeral website and it caught my attention Mrs. Gludt facial expression is so tender!! I read her story and she had a rough early start in life when loosing her mother at an early age. After that she had a fulfilling life. Even though she has fallen in a temporary deep sleep, she can return to life and continue to live a fulfilling life again with her loved ones, the bible, the words from God promises it. In the book of John 5:28-29 “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice+ 29 and come out”. Soon Mrs. Gludt will hear that voice, the voice of all voices, inviting her to life again. If anyone like to continue with with this conversation or have other questions, feel free in writing me back to symmeskh@gmail.com
