Richard "Dick" Voight

Richard “Dick” Voight passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Farmstead Care assisted living in Moorhead, MN. Dick was born on November 18, 1934 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to Ralph and Caroline (Herm) Voight. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953. He joined the Navy Reserves in 1951; in 1953 he went active, where he was stationed in Pensacola (FL). He was honorably discharged in 1955. After his time in the Navy he returned to Wisconsin, where he worked as a collector for Thorpe Finance. In 1962 he started his career in the radio industry, in Madison, WI. A year later he married Carroll (Jacobs) Voight. In 1965, he was transferred to KATE Radio in Albert Lea, MN, and within just 6 months was promoted to General Manager. There he became part of a group called Communication Properties (CPI), where he would serve as manager, as well as acquire part ownership of various stations located in Green Bay, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Boise, Albert Lee, and Fargo. In 1973, CPI split ways, and Dick moved to Fargo where he became manager, and later would become owner of KFGO. Under Dick’s guidance, KFGO acquired various awards including: 2 Peabody’s, 3 Marconi’s, 7 Edward R. Murrow Award’s, and News Talk Station of the Year. As well, in 2006, he was awarded the North Dakota Broadcaster of the Year, and received the Pioneer Award. Dick was also active in the community. He was deeply involved with the Salvation Army, and the Sharehouse. He served terms as president of each. In addition, he was involved in the El Zagel Shrine, and was a 32nd degree Free Mason member. Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman. He went on many various hunting and fishing trips in his lifetime, however two of his favorite locations, to which he regularly attended, include: hunting in Cayuga, ND, and fishing at Ballard’s Resort in Baudette, MN. In particular, he loved bringing his kids, and grandkids along for the journey. Throughout life, he also maintained a deep admiration for Nascar, Twins baseball, and Packer Football. Of which, he rarely missed a game/race. He will best be remembered for his affectionate mentality, calm demeanor, and quick-witted sense of humor. Above all commitments and hobbies, however, to Dick, family always came first. His favorite days were spent in Walker on Leech Lake, grilling on the deck with friends and family. Dick is survived by his Wife Carroll, two daughters and four grandchildren, daughters Karleen (Todd) Anderson Fargo and their two sons Shane and Jacob, Christine (Bob) George Fargo and their son Thomas and daughter Ricki. He is also survived by his brothers Wally (Jeri) Voight Susex, WI and brother Tom (Judy) Voight, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Brother-in-law Bill (Deb) Jacobs, Eau Claire, WI. Nieces and Nephews Pam (Tom) Voight, Diane (Paul) Szablewski, John (Jean) Voight, Eric (Lisa) Voight, Nicole (Troy) Carlson, Stephanie (Bob) Bohrer and Stacy (Bob) Gryboski. Great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Rick Voight, his parents Caroline and Ralph Voight, and also his in-laws Liz and Robert Jacobs.
