Robert “Bob” Johnson, age 87, 2308 18th Street South, Unit I, Fargo, ND, died on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Robert, the oldest child of Elmer Russell and Laura Christine (Binnie) Johnson, was born November 25, 1926 in Red Wing, Minnesota.  His family moved to the Langdon, North Dakota area when he was young, and he grew up and attended schools in Cavalier County and Langdon. He married Lois Mary (Baker) at the First Presbyterian Church, Fargo on October 3, 1952. Early in their marriage they lived in Langdon, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota, before moving to Fargo where he resided for over 60 years.

Following completion of military service, which included time in both the Navy and the Army, Robert earned degrees at Hanson’s Mechanical Trade School in Fargo, and North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.  He was employed as a Master Electrician for Central Electric and Modern Electric his entire career, and was proud of his many accomplishments in the industry.

He was member of First Presbyterian Church, Fargo; the Moorhead VFW Post 1223; the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Clay County 40 et 8 Voiture, where he was a past Chef de Gare; and was a proud lifetime member of the Melvin E. Hearl American Legion Post 21 of Moorhead, where he served in almost every capacity of leadership, including as Post Commander. Following retirement, he embraced his role as the Gaming Manager for Post 21, and was fondly known by all as “Bingo Bob” in that role for nearly two decades. Bob loved time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and could always be counted on to be up for a game of cards of any type, especially pinochle.

Bob is survived by his children, Wayne (Erna) Johnson, Nevis, MN; Jim (Kay) Johnson, Fargo; Lori (Skip) Gooch, Sioux Falls, SD; and Jodi Tollefson, Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Derek (Aimee) Johnson, Rochester, MN; Brady (Hillary Brewer) Johnson, Baytown, TX; Robin Johnson, San Francisco, CA; Emma Johnson, Portsmouth, NH; Laura (Spencer Schenk) Baker, Brandon, SD; Lindsay Gooch, Park Rapids, MN; Christopher Gooch and Logan Gooch, Sioux Falls, SD; Andreas Tollefson, Rochester, MN; Jennifer (Dave Hughes) Tollefson, Moorhead, MN; Katie (Jason) Grabow, Wabasha, MN; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Russell Johnson, Almira, WA; and a sister, Joan Secrest, Spokane, WA.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 50 years, Lois; Granddaughter Sarah Johnson; Grandson Patrik Tollefson; Son-in-law Ronald Tollefson; brother Charles Johnson; and sisters Nancy (Alan) Port and Laura (Dan) Medigovich.

The family requests that memorials may be directed to the Moorhead American Legion for a fund to be designated by the family. The family would like to give special thanks to the late Pastor Emory Roy and Pastor Mary Holtey of First Presbyterian Church, Fargo, for their compassionate ministry to Bob and his family.

  1. Fargo ND
Wayne, Jim, Lori and Jody….I remember your dad as a good, hard-working and easy going man who was always there for your family.

I still miss our kickball, football and baseball games in your backyard. You all had the “go to” house in the neighborhood. Lots of great memories.
