Shirley Zander

Shirley Zander, 77, Fargo, went to be with her heavenly Father on September 21, 2013.  Shirley Ann Leingang was born to Peter and Rose Leingang in St. Anthony, ND on July 16, 1936.  She was born and raised in that area and graduated from Mandan High School in Mandan, ND.  She worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company after graduation.  Shirley was united in marriage to Jerome Zander on June 9, 1959 in St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony, ND.  They made their home in Mandan, ND and in 1967 moved to Fargo.  Those closest to Shirley remember her as a devoted and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.  She was a kind and gentle woman with a deep devotion to her Catholic faith-praying the rosary often.

Shirley touched countless lives with her compassion, caring and generosity.  She lived every day of her life with grace, dignity, and beauty.  Mom deeply loved her family.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; they were her pride and joy.  She loved to take them on picnics, shopping and watching them play sports.  She enjoyed riding bike, reading, and travelling with her husband.  She loved being a homemaker and cooking and baking.  She was employed at Merit Care (Sanford) for 25 years enjoying her job as she was a people person.  She volunteered for Sanford Auxiliary and United Blood Fund.

Left with wonderful memories are her husband, Jerome; her daughters, Tammy Tollefson (Curt), Fargo; Jodi Zander, Fargo; her sons, Curtis(Marti), Cottage Grove, MN; Jeff (Janelle), Harwood, ND; and Jerry (Jenny), Athem, AZ; her grandchildren, Mike and Jim Hoiland, Margaret and Kelsey Tollefson, Sean and Mandy Carpenter, Michael, Morgan, Matthew, Megan, Jaden, Jordan, Austen, Jonathan and Nicholas Zander; her sister, Hildegard (Leo) Landeis, a brother, Leo (Gladys) Leingang and brother-in-law Ray Miller; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Lillian Miller, Anna Braun (Bernard) and Leona Schmidt (Ed); her infant brother Donald; and her brother William Leingang (Viola).

In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to Roger Maris Cancer Center, Hospice or Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Shirley’s family would like to acknowledge the caregivers, nurses and staff at Roger Maris Cancer Center, in particular, Dr. Steen, for their kindness and care shown to mom through the years.
