Sister Mary Shelley, age 87, a member of the Sisters of the Presentation, Fargo, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, in the Sisters? infirmary at Sacred Heart Convent, Fargo.
Sister Mary was born November 13, 1915, in Loma, North Dakota, the daughter of William Shelley and Mary Poquette Shelley. She had five sisters and one brother, who all preceded her in death. Sister Mary attended grade school in Loma and at St. Alphonsus in Langdon, where she went on to high school and graduated in 1932. She attended Valley City State College where she received her degree with a major in English and a minor in elementary education.
Sister Mary Shelley entered the order of the Sisters of the Presentation of Fargo in 1935 and when she received the habit of the Order in 1936 received the name of Sister Mary John. She made her Profession of Vows in 1938 and celebrated 60 years in Religious Life in 1998.
Sister Mary taught in all four of the Fargo Catholic grade schools and at St. Elizabeth?s School in Sykeston and St. James Academy in New Rockford, ND. When Sister retired from teaching, she tutored adults who were learning English as a second language, supervised the altar bread department in the Convent and did some resident visiting at Villa Maria. In 1989 Sister Mary was awarded a plaque by the Literacy Committee at Moorhead Technical Institute for her contribution to Moorhead Community Education. In 1993, she was nominated for the JC Penney Golden Rule Award for her many years of service in literacy training. Due to illness, Sister Mary has lived in the infirmary at Sacred Heart Convent the past several years.
Sister Mary is survived by the members of her religious Community and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Monday, June 16, from 10:30 to 1:00 at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, 1101 32nd Ave. South, and from 1:30 to 2:00 at Riverview Place, 5300 12th Street South, followed by the funeral at Riverview at 2:00 P.M.
