Steve Balstad, age 64, resident of Fargo, ND, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016. Steve was born June 6,1952, in Mayville, ND, to Marvin T. Balstad and Irene (Tykeson) Balstad. In 1970, he graduated from Mayville High School and married his high school sweet-heart, Sandra (Brooks) Balstad, on December 21, 1970. The happy couple lived in Mayville until moving to Fargo in 1973. Steve joined the Fargo Fire Department in 1974, and was known by his colleagues for being calm under pressure, an excellent leader and his top notch practice jokes. He advanced to the rank of Asst. Fire Chief and briefly served as Intirm Chief before retiring after 40 years of service in April, 2014. Steve loved to travel and had many hobbies including fishing, sailing, RC Car Racing, target shooting and camping. He enjoyed time around the campfire at Little Toad Lake with friends and cheering on both the the Bison and the Vikings. Steve is survived by his wife of 45 years; Sandra (Brooks) Balstad, his three daughters; Michelle (Todd) Woitzel, Jennifer (Eric) Heismeyer and Stephanie (Kjall) Ryland, nine grandchildren, his eldest brother; Ret. Col. Richard (Ruth) Balstad, his Mother-in-law; Sylvia Brooks, three brothers-in-laws; Ret. Col. Larry, Ron and Michael Brooks and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Steve was proceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Michael and Charles Balstad, Father-in-law; Gene Brooks and a granddaughter; Aubrey Ryland. The Funeral will take place at 1:30pm on September 4th, 2016 at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo. The Family asks that guest wear Caribbean attire. The family would like to thank the Fargo Fire Department for all their love and support. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Steve's name to the Fargo Fire Department Commemorative Firefighters Statue Fund.

Seems I knew Steve all my life as we use to play together while in grade school when he lived close to my grandmother near the college. I was happy when he returned for high school, living with donkey and later married you. You are a great couple. You are suffering a great loss. God bless and keep you.

  7. We were very saddened to hear of Steve’s passing. He was a very kind soul. Jason and I will never forget the smile he had on his face when Steve and Sandy came to the hospital the day Ryan was born. Steve will be dearly missed by us.

  13. It was my pleasure to know and work with Steve my entire firefighting career. The last time we met, in Bismarck, we had breakfast together. We visited about our careers and more importantly about retirement and our love of
    the Caribbean. It was truly an honor to know and serve with him. I’m so honored to call him a brother and a friend.

  15. I raced RC cars with Steve for a lot of years, He was a great guy and I will never forget him. I went to his funeral and it was was hard to not cry, After all that he did and all that he was he deserved more.
