Thomas Robert Stallman, age 81 of Mesa, AZ died Thursday, September 30, 2004 in the Palliative Care Unit of Meritcare Hospital, Fargo. Tom was born April 10, 1923 to Joseph F. And Louise (Klosterman) Stallman at Graceville, MN. He moved to Richland County, ND with his parents in 1925. He attended grade school in Barney Township and high school in Barney, ND. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and attached to the 2nd Marine Division for the invasion of the Japanese held islands of Saipan and Tinian. He later attached to the 5th Marine Division for the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1946. On October 30, 1946, he married Lois P. Jensen of Wyndmere, ND in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Tom and Lois lived in Barney Township and farmed in Richland County for thirty-seven years before moving to Fargo where they lived for nine years. For the last twelve years, they have called Mesa, AZ their home. Tom and Lois were members of St. Anthony?s Catholic Church in Mooreton, ND until their move to Fargo, where they joined Nativity Catholic Church. Tom served in the ND State Legislature for four terms, from 1958 through 1966. He also served three years as the State ASCS Committeeman. He then worked for 20 years on the staff of U.S. Senator Quentin N. Burdick, before retiring in 1989. Tom was a member and served as Post Commander for the Barney VFW Post #9366, and also was 10th district Commander of the VFW. He was also a member of the Fargo VFW Post #260. Hge was a life member of the Brown-Nelson American Legion Post #153 (Wyndmere) and was a member of the ND Iwo Jima Veterans Association and served as its president for two years. He also served as Richland County Non-Partisan League Secretary and as District Chairman of the Democratic NPL Party. He was active in the Elks, Eagles and Kiwanis Clubs. Thomas is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Lois, and his five children, Terry (Jane) of Detroit Lakes, MN, Patrick (Margie) of Rochester, MN, Timothy of Jefferson City, MO, Renee (Guy) Sander of West Fargo and Jerry (Doreen) of Billings, MT; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers, David of Palatine, IL, Verne of Mooreton, ND and Roger of Barney, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Louise; a granddaughter, Casey Louise Stallman and a brother, Daniel Stallman. The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Don Stallman, Dr. Gary Matthys and the wonderful team of physicians and staff in the Meritcare Hospital organization. A memorial service will be held Monday, October 4, 2004 at 10:00 am in the Church of the Nativity, Fargo. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 3, 2004 from 5-7 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
