Wallace Hertwig

Wallace Adolph Hertwig, 92, was granted his prayer to go home to Heaven with Jesus on August 26, 2019 at North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon ND. Wally was born on September 22, 1926 on the family farm in Grandin ND to Maidda (Bettermann) and Adolph C. Hertwig. In the spring on 1932 they moved to a farm west of Blanchard ND. He attended school in Blanchard ND up to the 7th grade when he had to help with the family farm. His first job was shoveling coal from the train and transporting it to businesses. Wally joined the Navy in March of 1946 and was medically discharged in 1947 after breaking his pelvis and back. He married Imogene Bye on June 7, 1947. They purchased the BB Shop (Blanchard Blacksmith) in July of 1953 where he primarily worked until he retired. Wally was known for his story telling. He loved to tell jokes and his family will always remember the “Little Bo Peep” story. He loved to sing and any trip in the car meant the whole family would be singing songs. He and Imo sang at celebrations in the community and at special functions. Wally seemed to always have a smile on his face and had a gentle disposition. He was a very humble man and never wanted to put anyone out. Wally was a member of St John’s Lutheran in Hillsboro ND for most of his life. He was faithful to His Lord to the end, reading his Bible and attending Bible study and services at the home in Lisbon ND. He was also a member of the American Legion. Wally is survived by his 5 children, Larry Hertwig, Jerry Hertwig (Theresa) Susie Miller (Vic), Janet Mitzel (Kirk), and John Hertwig (Diane), 12 grandchildren Karie Kowalski (Stan), Pennie Reinke (Dennis), Cindy Dullum (Derek), Christy Strandberg (Nick), Killian Miller, Anthony Mitzel (Megan), Monica Lang (Tyler), Kirsten Lindsey (Matt), Priscilla Dunham (Nick), Andy Hertwig, Ashley Hertwig-Frieler (Jacob), and Evan Hertwig, 20 great granchildren, soon to be 21, and 1 great great granchild with another coming soon, his brother Robert Hertwig (Rosalie), and many nieces, nephews, and brother and sister-In-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Maidda Hertwig, his brothers Roy and Carl Hertwig and their spouses, Bertha and Jeanie, his sisters Edna Brasel and Bertha Seim and their spouses Carl Brasel and Lowell Seim. Memorial funds will be sent to ND Veterans Home and St John Lutheran Church. A special thank you to all the staff at ND Veterans Home, especially the staff in B Pod and D Pod for their wonderful care, and to the drivers and activity staff who loved Wally like family!
