Nellie Jean Audrey Vangsness passed away on July 30, 2022 at Sanford Medical at the age of 88.

Nellie Jean was born June 22, 1934 to Leonard and Olga (Petersen) Anderson in Rugby, ND.

Nellie Jean was united in marriage to Elmer Vangsness on January 22, 1954 in Rugby, ND. They moved to Fargo, ND in 1958. Nellie Jean worked at the NDSU library for 25 years until retiring in 1996. Nellie Jean volunteered at the Sons of Norway for 24 years, even though Nellie Jean was a Swede, she thought she could teach them a thing or two.

Nellie Jean was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway.

Nellie Jean is survived by her sons, Gary (Cindy) of Gilbert, MN; David of Fargo; and her daughter, Janice (Brian) Templin of Waite Park, MN; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers, Larry Anderson of Moorhead, MN; and Alan Mark (Bonnie) Anderson of Fargo.

Nellie Jean was proceeded in death by her husband, Elmer (2013); her parents; step father, Albin Anderson; and brother Fredrick Leon Anderson.

  10. I have many good memories of Nellie and especially when I lived in Fargo. I used to pick Nellie up for our bridge group in my little VW. She thought it was a real cool ride, so she brought a blanket along to keep warm. We had lots of laughs and good times together. I will miss her and her great sense of humor.
    My sympathy to Jan, David and Gary. You had a great Mom.

  11. While a student at NDSU, I worked for Nellie for four years in the library. She was so wonderful to me. She was kind, funny, and caring. I really enjoyed my time working there because of her. She was on my mind today, having had no idea she has just passed away. She was a positive influence in my life, I’m very glad to have known her.
