Alfred E. Steiger, age 94, passed away on March 16, 2023, at the ND State Veterans Home, Lisbon, ND where he resided since 2001. Alfred was born in Beulah, ND to Jacob and Martha Steiger on April 30, 1928. He attended grade school in Hazelton, ND. In 1955 he attended the ND State School of Science where he studied sheet metal and heating/cooling repair.

He met the love of his life, Margareta Baumstarck in Bismarck, ND on a blind date. They married on June 27, 1956, in Bismarck. They permanently moved to Fargo in 1958. Alfred and Margareta (Auntie) adored each other and shared their love with foster children over the years. They also enjoyed spending time with their family, especially their nieces and nephews, playing cards, and being involved with many church activities. Alfred was a loving caregiver to Auntie over the years during her many health problems. A strong Catholic faith was the foundation of their marriage.

Alfred proudly served in the Army during the Korean War, 1952-1954. He worked with heavy equipment and in communications. He was honorably discharged and served in the Army reserves until 1961. Alfred worked a variety of jobs including construction, maintenance, and being a bus driver. He retired from St. John’s Hospital in 1989 after working 20 years in the house keeping department.

Being involved in his community was very important to Alfred. He stayed active volunteering with making 10’s of thousands of red crepe paper poppies for Veterans while residing at the Vet’s home. In his younger years he eagerly gave many gallons of blood and was recognized for his donations. Staying active was a priority in his life with interests including gardening, bowling, and bird watching or care. He enjoyed dancing and listening to polka and country music. He volunteered as a sacristan for many years in area Catholic churches. He was well known for his smile that rarely seemed to leave his face.

He is survived by his sister, Emma, Bismarck, brothers Teddy, Bismarck, and Emile, MT; sisters-in-law Julianna Malsom, Ipswich, SD, Beverly Baumstarck, Worland, WY, and Fran Leingang, Fargo, ND; brother-in-law Adam (Cecilia) Baumstarck, Linton, ND; many nieces and nephews; and his Lisbon Veterans family. Preceding him in death were his wife, parents, two brothers, and numerous in-laws.

Special thank you to CHI Hospice and the caring staff at the Lisbon Veterans home for the compassionate care provided to Alfred.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I remember going to alfred and margaritas house as a kid. My parents bill and rose Vetter played cards with them and we, all 6 of us kids played. They were both so kind.

  2. Great Uncle Alfred, I always looked forward to your visits with Auntie! You were such a positive person and always had a smile and friendly conversation! May your soul rest in peace!! 🙏

  3. RIP Alfred! Memories of Alfred & Margarete coming over and visiting my parents on occasion are present at this time. Thank you Alfred for your service to our country.

  4. I am the son of Wilbert Steiger, Alfreds brother. I wanted to say we are sorry to hear of Alfreds passing and I have always remembered his happy face. Butch and Joleen Steiger

  5. I am Alfred’s niece, Janet Steiger Nielsen. My dad is Alfred’s younger brother, Emil, who passed away in 2009. I came over 2 different times to visit Uncle Alfred from Montana after my dad’s passing and Uncle was so happy to have a visitor from so far away. I will always remember him and Aunt Margareta with great fondness. RIP, Uncle. You are with Jesus and your loving wife and others who you’ve longed to see again!

  6. Alfred served his community as a true servant. Though a relative of his wife, I met them professionally when a social worker at Catholic Family Service as they provided shelter for foster children. Alfred served the common good throughout his life.

  7. Jerry and I (Helen) met Alfred and Margareta through Marriage Encounter, we helped with their monthly news letter. We continued our friendship for many years, including other couples, to play cards and shared many laughs together. Alfred always had some new thing he had made! RIP good and faithful servant.

  8. Sadly, due to the impending snow storm we will not be able to attend Uncle Alfred’s funeral Mass. We have fond memories of him and Auntie visiting with us in Bismarck, Mandan, Fargo and Lisbon. Uncle Alfred’s tender, loving care for Auntie with her health issues was commendable. She always acknowledged him with a thank you, Honey Alfred! We will always remember Uncle Alfred sitting at his table making countless Poppies at the Lisbon Veteran’s Home. God bless you with eternal life with Him in Heaven!

  9. Alfred and Margarita was one of the couples that was part of a group of card players that my folks belonged to. Later on I worked at the same hospital as Al. He always had a smile on his face. RIP

  10. Alfred and I went for coffee for over 20 years most every weekend. We had great times and later on when he couldn’t drive I’d pick him up. We had a grand tour of every place that served coffee. I suppose I could have saved the time and gas running around and just had coffee at home but Alfred was always there with his special hats and big grin and that was fun. I had visited Alfred recently and my biggest regret was not waking him up as he was so sound asleep. That was maybe 10 days ago. I went in this morning to check on him and the sign in didn’t list his name. I had no idea …gone like that. I’ll miss you Alfred old friend.

  11. Rest in Peace Alfred. You will be missed by Ed and I. Ed would take him for coffee every chance he got. I enjoyed talking with you!! You were such an up beat person and loved the children and you would always give them a quarter. So glad I got to know you.

  12. I remember Al & Margareta, they fellow members of St. Anthony’s Parish years ago when our girls were babies. Such a wonderful couple, now both in Heaven celebrating w/ our Lord. I was honored to be present @ Al’s celebration of Life mass @ St. Anthony’s Parish
    God Bless:

  13. We met Alfed years ago, at St. Aloysius Church, when he stopped to say hi to our kids. We often visited after church where he tracked down the kids to give them a quarter. His welcoming smile and positive attitude brought happiness to many. RiP Alfred.

  14. I was Alfred and Margareta’s neighbor kid. My brother and I took out their garbage for them! Yep! For a quarter each 😁. Rest eternally Alfred. I’m happy that you and Margareta are together again ❤️
