She was born June 1, 1925, on her parents’ farm west of Portland, ND. The family later moved near Clifford, ND where she was raised with 3 siblings on a dairy farm and graduated from Clifford High School in 1943. After attending Interstate Business College in Fargo, she moved to Hillsboro and worked at the Traill County Courthouse. She attracted the eye of a dashing young Veterinarian, Dr. Robert C. Reed, and they were married on New Year’s Eve, 1947. Shortly after, they built a home in Hillsboro to raise their family and serve the community in their veterinary practice. In 1969 they moved to Bismarck, ND, where Robert served as the ND Assistant State Veterinarian. Upon his retirement in 1983, they began spending their winters in McAllen, TX with their daughter, Kim. In 1986 they purchased a lake home on Spirit Lake near Vergas, MN. This became a venue for a plethora of blessed annual family gatherings as their family grew by leaps and bounds.
When Robert passed away in 2008, Alice moved to Edgewood Village and enjoyed a comfortable life in the company of visiting family, friends, and caretakers. She was a loving and supportive wife and mother, and a faithful friend to many. She loved to write beautiful letters to friends and family, and with the advancement of technology she courageously ventured into email and texting. Kind and fun-loving, she was a valued member of many communities and religious groups. As a mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend, Alice was well-loved and will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Algot and Ella (Evenson) Nelson; her husband, Dr. Robert Reed; and her two brothers, Bertel and Richard Nelson.
She is survived by her sister, Myrna (Bud) Holkesvig of Mayville, ND; five children: John (Joanne) Reed of Brooten, MN, Terry (Susan) Reed of Hillsboro, ND, Vickie (Michael) Milde of Menasha, WI, Susan (Craig) Stringer of Modesto, CA, Kimberly (Thomas) Smith of Lone Star, TX; and special niece, Denese Odegaard of Fargo; as well as 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and countless other friends and loved ones.

Dear Sue and family,
Our condolences for your loss. Even though we never got to personally know Alice, it was easy to feel so much love for her because of the wonderful sentiments you expressed about your cherished Mom. So thankful for our wonderful hope that gives us comfort and strength at sad times like this (Isaiah 26:19; John 5:28,29; Revelation 21:3-5). You are loved, in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Reed Family
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Alice. She was such a fun sweet lady. I have such fond memories of our familys, along with the Klosters, on summer camp outs and picnics in Devils Lake. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Imagine the reunion of the 6 of them in heaven!
Sending love and deepest sympathies,
Karen Engelhart Picotte
Alice was a very kind and wonderful mother. I spent alot of my younger years at their home with their daughter Sue. My sympathy to the whole family
One 3-day weekend in February of 2011, Alice, Sue and myself went on a road trip to see as many lighthouses as we could along the California coast because Alice loved lighthouses. We had so much fun. Alice was a joy to spend time with, always willing to try new things and always had encouraging conversations. The photo I posted to the timeline is from the day after the coast drive, at the Castelllo di Amorosa in Calistoga, CA – in the wine country.
My sincere sympathies to Alice’s whole family. Losing her to the enemy death is certainly tragic, but thanks to our Grand Creator, temporary.
Heart felt sympathy to Alice’s family. What a beautiful person, inside and out. Such a big, loving heart, with room for family and SO many friends. It was a privilege to know her and I look forward to seeing her in the coming resurrection.
❤️ Kathy
Dear Reed Family,
While visiting my cousins, good friends of Alice’s ( Chuck and Edie Wysocki) We were privileged to meet her. The visit at her home was a highlight of our trip, so sweet and hospitable. She will surely be missed. We look forward to getting to know her better in the Paradise where God has promised that death will be no more (Rev 21:3,4) May you find comfort in good memories and dear friends and family. Family of Alice Reed: we lived across the street from Alice in Edgewood Village. Alice was a very fine lady & loved to visit. Once she moved to the Vista & I would see her over there she looked so good & was thriving & she always told me she liked it there. Cherish the many memories of your loved ones, no one can take those from you.
I always enjoyed seeing Alice and doc. every summer at Spirit lake. Alice was so happy and welcoming. Sherri and I couldn’t of had better lake neighbors. Rest in peace Alice and thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
