Alma Irene Klug, 102, of Fargo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Catherine’s North. Born on November 15, 1922 to Henning and Lula (Gulland) Johnson, Alma lived a life full of love, laughter, and wonderful memories.
Growing up in Leonard, North Dakota, she attended country school through the 8th grade before moving to Fargo. It was there that she began her career at Fairmont Creamery. She met her beloved husband, Hubert Klug, on a bus. They tied the knot on February 1, 1946, and created a warm and welcoming home together, first on a farm near Ulen, Minnesota, then back in Fargo.
Alma worked various jobs throughout her life, including stints at the Great Northern Lunch Counter, Herbst Department Store, NDSU, and St. Luke’s Hospital. She was a dedicated member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fargo, where she was actively involved in the Women’s Auxiliary and enjoyed hosting family and friends. Alma cherished her time with her sewing club, where friendships blossomed over 50 years, and looked forward to her monthly meetings with Pastor Dave for devotions, songs, and communion.
She was also known for her delicious baking, especially her famous donuts. Alma and Hubert loved their date nights together, sharing laughs and creating beautiful memories.

I went to see Grandma on Friday. I didn’t realize that it was going to be the last time I was able to. I just talked and talked. I thanked her for all the goodies. Best chocolate chip cookies ever! I also thanked her for all the precious memories. Especially the funny ones. One of my favorites was her hopping into her great granddaughter Hanna’s gocart. (She must have been in her 80s at the time!) They were whipping around the yard. No fear! We were all laughing and she had this look of pure fun on her face. Thank you Grandma!
Thank you Laurie for your memory message— when I read it gave me a chuckle.
My deepest sympathy to the Klug family. Alma was one of my favorite aunts! She was so kind and generous. I have many fond memories of her growing up and always remember her bring a big box of her homemade bake goods to our home around the holidays.
Grandma Klug, I will always remember you trying to scare me with the croaking frog (if I seen that damn thing today I would probably still be scared if it!!), baking the YUMMIEST homemade Reese’s (Grandpa Wayne and I would actually hide them from each other), and you letting me whip you around on the go cart. I’m sorry I didn’t get to know you in my adult life, or you knowing your THREE GREAT- GREAT- grandchildren, but alas everyone made their choices, and it is life. I am glad your spunk, and stubbornness was apart of my childhood. Rest Easy and fly high Great Grandma.
Alma and my Mom Violet Bood Breitbach both grew up around Leonard ND and later roomed together and worked together at the Fairmount Creamery. Mom told the story of after they got their paycheck they went shopping together at the Department store in Fargo, first stopping at the restroom there. The story goes that Alma went into a stall and I guess she didn’t see that Mom went into the stall next to her. Alma put her purse on the floor in full view of Mom. Mom thought she’d play a trick on Alma and grab her purse away. Alma saw her purse being taken and grabbed Mom’s hand so fast that Mom started laughing . Alma realized that was her and scolded her laughing saying “OH VIOLET”!! I think they were always playing tricks on each other like that. Rest in Peace Alma
