September 27, 1928 ~ September 22, 2022

Born in: Hillsboro, ND
Resided in: Fargo - formerly of Hillsboro, ND

Avis passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, surrounded by her loving family. She was 93.

Avis Margaret Jahnke was born on September 27, 1928, the daughter Alfred and Clara (Johnson) Jahnke, in Hillsboro, North Dakota. She grew up in Hillsboro and attended school, graduating in 1946. Avis then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for two years.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd Thompson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church on June 18, 1949. They made their home in Hillsboro where they raised their family and operated Thompson Construction for many years. In later years, Avis and Lloyd split their time between Mesa, Arizona and Pelican Lake, Minnesota. Lloyd passed away in 2006.

Avis enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles before she lost the majority of her sight to macular degeneration. She was very fond of cooking and was known by the family for her hotdishes, potato salad and fruit salads. She took joy in simply sitting on the deck of her cabin at Pelican Lake. Avis loved watching, and later listening to, Days of Our Lives, The Price is Right and Jeopardy. She absolutely adored other people’s dogs, though when her children were small, they did have a family dog, Skippy. She delighted in her role as a great-grandmother, cherishing each and every one of her great-grandchildren.

Avis is survived by her daughter, Patty (Jim) McConnell of South Bend, IN, her son, Mike (Karen) Thompson of Hillsboro, ND and her grandchildren – Mike (Pilar Perez-Romero) McConnell, Dan (Chrissy) McConnell, Brian (Amelia) McConnell, Katie (Chris Engel) McConnell, Heather (Rick) Arechigo, Casey (Michelle Anderson) Thompson, Jeremy (Mary Lammott) Thompson and Kirk (Danielle) Hotvedt. Also surviving are her very special great-grandchildren – Felipe, Paula and Mikey McConnell-Perez, Padric and Isla McConnell, Allison Arechigo, and Ben, Joseph, Tom, and Jack Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd, and her infant grandson.

In lieu of flowers and monetary donations, memorials are preferred to 4 Luv of Dog Rescue or the Macular Degeneration Association.
