Barbara Esther Ness (nee Johnson)

Barb Ness, age 88, passed away February 24th, 2026 in Fargo, ND.

Barb was born on July 28th, 1937 to John Willis Johnson and Esther (Anderson) Johnson in Mayville, ND. She attended Grade School and High School in Galesburg, ND. After High School, She attended St Joseph’s School of Nursing in Fargo, ND graduating with her Registered Nurse degree (one of the last 3 year RN’s in North Dakota) in 1958. She then attended Nurse Anesthetist school in Grand Forks, ND at St Michaels Hospital.

While in Nurse Anesthetist school, she married her High School sweetheart Curtis Jerome Ness at Clifford Lutheran Church on November 22, 1958. The couple moved to Grand Forks, where she continued to practice at St Micheal’s. In 1959, their first son Keith Allan was born, followed in 1961 by Michael John in 1961 and by James in 1966. With the birth of Michael, Barbara decided to focus on caring full-time for her boys. She was an unending champion and supporter of her family. In 1968, tragedy struck , when Jimmy died from a brain tumor. She showed great courage and fortitude throughout his illness and hospitalization.

In 1974, Curt took a promotion to Sgt in the Highway Patrol in the Fargo District and the family moved to Harwood, ND. During this time she returned to nursing, when her 2 oldest sons attended NDSU. Barb often said she missed the solitude of rural life and the good friends that she met there.

In 1997, She and Curt moved to Fargo for their remaining years. The summers were spent visiting with friends neighbors, traveling throughout the United States and visiting family in Colorado.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Curtis, her son James, her sister Mary Halvorson, and her parents, John and Esther Johnson.

She is survived by her sons, Keith (Carmen), and Michael (Diane), 5 Grandsons, Jesse (Keneisha), Ryan, Kevin, Daniel and Joshua (Traci). She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren; Khadriennia, Khaliannah, Kenzie and Kelsey.

She will be missed.

  1. Barb,
I will greatly miss you. You have been a very important part of my life. I will miss all our talks & laughs & cries we had with each other. You are like a second Mom to me & your family is my second family.
Rest in Peace my dear friend. I Love You & I will miss you everyday.

    Lolita

  2. She was the best next door neighbor anyone could ever have. Our whole family will miss her awesome front porch talks and happy greetings. Rest in peace Barb we love you🙏🏼

  3. Your Momma was one of my favorite patients! I was her nurse at the clinic for many years! I loved her dry humor, and giving Curt a bad time. It was always fun to see her. She will be missed as well as your dad!. Bless their hearts!

  4. We are missing Barb already – she was always a treasure trove of information and such a kind and caring neighbor. I loved our chats in the yard and her wit and sense of humor. Rest in peace dear Barb and our sincere condolences and deep sympathy to her family. Sonja and Family.

  5. Barb, I will miss our talks, helping you with things around the house like getting yoir tv to work. I still find myself looking across the street to see if you are movin around the house. You will always be in my heart, I will always love you, Curt, and the rest of your family. You have always been more than a neighbor, you all are an extended family to me, Lolita, and Morgan. Enjoy being with Curt, Jim again. All my love !!

  6. We miss talking to you and hearing your voice, Grandma. As the weeks go by, nothing feels the same without you. The silence where your laughter used to be is something we still don’t quite know how to fill.
I find myself thinking about all the long conversations we shared the way you told your stories like it was the first time, every single time. Those moments were never just talks; they were comfort, love, and memories being built that we will carry with us forever.
I hope heaven has a cozy corner just for you, filled with your favorite books, a glass of wine nearby, and plenty of crackers and cheese. I can just picture you there smiling, at peace, maybe even sharing your stories with someone new.
Thank you for the love you gave so freely, for the time you spent with us, and for being someone so special in our lives. You changed us in the best ways.
We miss you more than words can say, and we love you always, our sweet Besta/Grandma. You will forever live in our hearts.
Give Bacca/Grandpa and your loving Baby Jimmy a hug for us. Jesse, Keneisha,Khadriennia, Khaliannah, Kensie and Kelsie😘🫂
