Beatrice Almyra Roberts, 99 of Fargo, ND died peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024, after a short stay at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo.

Bea was born in Fairdale, ND on May 4, 1924, to George and Hilda (Rustan) Gunhus.
She graduated in 1946 from St. Luke’s School of Nursing, after being accepted by the Cadet Nurse Corp program. This program expedited and subsidized candidates who agreed to serve stateside during World War II as the shortage of nurses was critically impacted by those serving overseas.

In 1950, she married Warren G. Roberts in Grand Forks, ND, and resided in Fargo for the entirety of their marriage. In the early years, Bea worked in the obstetrics department at St. Luke’s Hospital from 1946 through 1951, in Fargo.

Although she didn’t continue working as a nurse, Bea was involved in the St. Luke’s School of Nursing Alumni Association. She enjoyed organizing and attending their reunions and maintained friendships throughout the years. Her other interests were Edgewood Ladies Golf in the summer and belonging to several bowling leagues in the winter. As an avid bridge player, she enjoyed playing with her friends throughout the year.

She leaves us with a wonderful legacy of caring, and loving devotion to her family. Through her strength, compassion, independence, and generosity she has been a strong role model, leaving such a positive remembrance for all of us.

Bea is survived by her sons: Don (Mary), Rochester, MN, Richard, Fargo, ND, and John, Fargo, ND; Grandchildren: Craig (Shauna), Highland, UT, Eric (Kristina), Edina, MN, Andy (Madison), Rochester, MN; Great Grandchildren: Lauren, Ryan, Ethan, Highland, UT, Elsa, Linnea, Edina, MN, Evelyn, Isaac, Charlotte, Rochester, MN; she is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren G. Roberts; her parents, George and Hilda Gunhus, and three brothers, Ernest Gunhus, (Helen), Wallace Gunhus (Edna), and Arthur Gunhus (Ruby); three sisters-in-law, Harriet (William) Baysore, Jane (Mahlon) Everett and Roberta (Bernard) Kennedy; she was also preceded in death by two nieces and four nephews.

The funeral service will be Saturday, February 24 at the First United Methodist Church in Fargo, ND at 11 am. Visitation will be at 10am at the church. Burial will be at a later date at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo.

The family prefers Memorials to Sanford Hospice House or Bethany Retirement Living, both in Fargo. Bea’s family extends a warm thank you to the wonderful caregivers at these facilities.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Dear Don and Mary, Dick, and John and family,

Our sympathy to your family on the loss of your mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Rich and I have wonderful memories of Aunt Bea. Her positive attitude and caring nature will always be remembered. She leaves a remarkable legacy. Blessed be her memory.

    Blessings and Love,
    Karen and Rich Axvig

  2. All that knew Bea were blessed by her sweet nature and gracious heart. And always a warm smile. Sending love and prayers to her family.

  3. Bea was the mother of my childhood friend, Dick. We were backyard neighbors in south Fargo and our mothers were friends. Dick and I had only to crawl through the hedge dividing our yards in order to start playtime. I think John joined us from time to time also. It wasn’t until several years ago though, when Bea’s niece Coleen reconnected us, that my husband and I were able to have annual visits with Bea, Dick and John and we learned what a truly remarkable woman Bea was and what an interesting life she had led. Family was very important to her and we were treated to pictures and stories about what all the kids were doing. Her interest in golf quickly won over my husband and we both felt privileged to know her. We send sincere condolences to the entire family. May you be surrounded by love and peace.

  4. I became acquainted with Bea and Warren Roberts at Edgewood Golf Course in the 1970s. They were such warm and generous people and they were both respected leaders in the local golf community. Thereafter, whenever Beth and I would cross paths with Bea it would simply warm our hearts to visit with her. She was just one of those people. So positive. So loving. It would make our day. Don and Mary, Richard and John and other family members–please accept Beth’s and my sincere condolences on Bea’s death. Erik Johnson

  5. Bea was my mom’s (Hazel Job) nurse at St Luke’s when I was born. They became good friends following and I recall visits to her home.

  6. During our growing-up years, the Andy Griffith show was watched on TV and enjoyed by most of us. It was a positive show about life in a caring community, and it matched the life I lived in Western ND. The TV character on that show, Aunt Bea, was a kind, loving, and gentle personality. We are so lucky to have had our own Aunt Bea in our lives! Our’s too was always welcoming, accepting, and positive — and our aunt had good treats available!
Thank you, dear Aunt Bea, for being a wonderful role model in our lives!
Coleen, niece of Warren & Bea, and family

  7. BEA WAS A WONDERFUL WOMAN. HER SON, DON, HAS BEEN A LONG TIME FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER SO WE GOT O SEE BEA OVER THE YEARS. SHE NEVER SEEMED TO AGE AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE INTO HER 90S! SHE WAS A WONDERFUL CAREGIVER. BLESS HER, LORD AND WELCOME HER INTO YOUR LOVING ARMS. MARK AND RENEE BOFFERDING

  8. My sister & I were just talking about Johnny (he worked at the local grocery store) which lead us to Bea & unfortunately to the news of her passing. Mom & Dad lived next door to Warren & Bea on 6th st for many years and remained friends…dad said Warren was the greatest friend & mom & Bea were very close too (although I think they bowled against each other..lol…different leagues ) we grew up knowing Dickey & Johnny…I think Don was away at college or something…but what wonderful memories I have of Bea..what a beautiful soul…it shows in the pictures also..I would run into her occasionally at the grocery store & we would catch up…dad recently called and spoke with her…they had planned to bring ” the boys” Johnny & Dickey out to my farm (don’t put things off) I would have loved that !! We lost mom 11 yrs ago…I bet they’re in heaven bowling & playing cards !! We send out deepest sympathy to the entire family…but what a blessing to have a “Bea” in your lives while you did !! I know we were blessed to have known her !! Our thoughts are with you.
The Gary & Ina Fae Nelson family
