Brian’s services will be viewable on this page shortly before they begin.
Brian Scott Nelson, 58, Fargo, ND, died on February 22, 2024 at Hospice House, Sanford Broadway Medical Center with his wife by his side.
He was born on November 12, 1965 in Edmonds, Washington to Larry and Arlene Nelson. He attended grade school in Washington, then moved to Stanley, North Dakota with his family in 7th grade. He attended school in Stanley, graduating in 1984. In high school he played basketball and football, receiving a college scholarship for football as a kicker to Minot State College. He was an all-conference kicker at Minot State, and graduated with a BS in elementary education with two minors in drivers’ education and physical education. In 1991 he received a Master of Science degree in educational administration, preparing him for his next step, superintendent of schools. Brian taught elementary education from 1991-93 in Rolette for 5th and 6th grade. In 1993-95 he taught in Newburg as a 5th and 6th grade teacher and elementary principal. In 1995-96 he taught in Carson as a 5th and 6th grade teacher and elementary principal. From 1996-2003 he was the Berthold school superintendent, from 2003-2017 he was the Lewis and Clark superintendent as he spearheaded a school consolidation in that area. In 2017 he retired from Berthold, but still decided to be a superintendent down in Fairmount, ND from 2017-2023 as well as a superintendent in Rosholt, SD, from 2020-2023, sharing between the two schools, half-days every day. In his educational career, he also coached basketball, football, baseball, and taught drivers’ ed for many years as well as driving school bus for games and also bus routes. During his years at Berthold he participated in the Berthold fire department as a volunteer, and belonged to the Sportman’s club.
Brian loved fishing. He made many trips to Alaska fishing for salmon and halibut with family and friends. He especially loved lake time at the lakehome, pontooning with family and enjoying the children and grandchildren making memories. Brian and Ellen loved to travel, and had been on numerous cruises, with the first cruise being the proposal of marriage cruise! Brian loved supporting his family, and was at his kids’ sporting events and musical events all the time. Brian was caring, compassionate, and was very passionate about what he believed in. He spoke his mind and he always put children first in his profession and in his personal life. He often told his family he was the protector and the provider, and he worked hard to fill that role, while at the same time was very loving. As an example, he opened his home to people during the Minot flood, and would help others whenever he could. Brian was a HUGE Washington Huskies fan since boyhood, having seen numerous football games in person as well as a loyal fan on game day, piping the school fighting song loudly on a Saturday morning. While living in Fargo, Brian was on the Fargo School Board and he was currently serving on the Town and Country Credit Union board. In his spare time (spare time?) he drove Uber for extra money. He loved driving Uber, telling his family stories of the people he met. Brian had such an impact on so many people, including students and staff, and he will be forever missed.

Ellen and family, I am so saddened to hear about Brian’s passing. I know he came into your lives and treated you all as his own. For that I am grateful. Please know that I am thinking about all of you and praying for peace at this difficult time. Know that you have an angel watching over you as he will keep his eye on you. Love and hugs to all of you.
I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to Brian’s family in hearing of his passing. I thank you for taking me to Alaska fishing Scoop as it was something you did dearly enjoy — catching Salmon and Halibut. I also remember well the softball years back in Stanley, and you hitting the big hit in the State Championship game in Minot that ended up being the winning runs for our team becoming State Champions. Things such as this are never easy, and to find the right words to say are tough as a tear or two wells up in my eyes. I am glad I knew you. God Bless and Godspeed.
Jeff
Our Condolences to Brian’s Family. So many memories of Brian as we were neighbors growing up, from Jr High thru High School, playing sports together, to him accompanying our family to Canada for family vacations. Although after HS Graduation we went our separate ways, we always remembered and visited about our past when given the chance to visit with each other. He was a family man and nothing was more important. Brian was an outstanding Ambassador for Public Education…. next to his family his students and their welfare were his top priority. His legacy will be his Role in promoting Solid never ending Leadership in Public Education. Scoop your Family Friends and Classmates will miss your smile , your wit , and humor . To the Family , may His Peace and Confort surround everyone as you Remember and Celebrate Brian’s life and legacy. Travis & Weni

So very sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all at this time.
I’m so sorry for your loss Brian was an amazing man. I served on the Fargo School Board with him and he was so awesome. He will be missed.
Deepest condolences on Brian’s passing. Thinking of all of you.
I can echo what Travis had written about Brian being an “Ambassador for Public Education” . He always put students first when it came to his educational decisions, no matter if they were popular or not. He cherished his family and friends and always made them feel special. At his retirement gathering in Berthold several years ago he invited some of the people that influenced his life. One of them was his former Stanley High School English teacher, (and my mom) Amy Strasser. Such a kind and thoughtful thing to do on a day that was his to shine. He touched so many lives and will truly be missed. May God be with his family and friends during this difficult time. Bless the wonderful memories we have of Brian.
We are so sorry for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers
Last year at our Granddaughter’s graduation in Fairmount he gave them the most inspiring message I have ever heard. It was directed to those who struggle and to never give up. I will never forget it.
I am sure he has touched the lives of countless young people and will forever be remembered.
Sorry to hear of Brian’s passing. Brian and I were high school classmates and one memory I have is going with him and some other friends to the Rodenhizer cabin in Canada. Rest assured his pain is over and waiting in heaven to greet us.
Brian was a beautiful soul, man, father and husband. He was a blessing to everyone he met and will forever be in my heart and mind.
I am so sorry for your great loss. Brian was always such a kind, funny, and well liked guy in Stanley. I know he suffered greatly and believe that he is at rest now and free from pain. He lived a very full life as a man of God and his reward in Heaven will be amazing.
His friend,
Judy
