Bruce Carlisle MD

Bruce M. Carlisle, 68, Fargo, North Dakota passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 at Avow Hospice Inpatient Center, Naples, Florida after a 2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.
You can follow Bruce’s journey at www.caringbridge.org/visit/brucecarlisle. Bruce was born June 29, 1949 in Valley City, North Dakota to John and Carol Jean (Larson) Carlisle. He graduated from Valley City High School in 1967 before attending the University of North Dakota where he graduated with a degree in Philosophy in 1971. He was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity at UND. He married Nan Norman on May 1, 1970 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota. He graduated from University of North Dakota Medical School in 1976. He did his residency in Internal Medicine in Fargo. He founded Internal Medicine Associates (IMA) in 1979. He had offices in Fargo, Hawley and Barnesville. He was Vice President of Medical Affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota for 12 years. He finished his working career as an Emergency Room Physician at Lake Region Medical Center, Fergus Falls. Bruce truly loved his profession, medical colleagues, and patients.
Bruce had a passion for golf, hunting, and fishing amongst a strong bond with all of his labradors. He thrived at any card game and was a Master Bridge player. Bruce loved spending time with his family and friends in the Detroit Lakes area. His spiritual life was changed for the greater good when he was confirmed in the Catholic Church in the year 2000. In that same year, his faith journey was enriched after going on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nan, Fargo; children, Corey Carlisle, Washington D.C., Christopher (Katherine) Carlisle, Fargo, ND, Casey (Natasha) Carlisle, Hatton, ND and Kelly (Tom) Kopp, Fargo, ND; 12 grandchildren, Kiras, Avery, Bethany, William, Molly, Casey, John, Dominic and Michael Carlisle, Porter, Briggs and Maris Kopp; brother, John “Hap” (Sally) Carlisle, Asotin, WA; sisters, Beth (Dick) Anderson, Bellingham, WA, Peggy Carlisle, Bainbridge Island, WA and Eileen Carlisle, Santa Rosa, CA; mother-in-law, Mary Jane Norman, Fargo, ND and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert John, parents, John and Carol Jean and father-in-law, Robert “Bob” Norman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Lake Region Cancer Center, 908 South Cascade St Fergus Falls, MN 56537, First Choice Clinic, 1351 Page Dr. Fargo, ND 58103, and/or Avow Hospice Center, 1095 Whipporwill Lane Naples, FL 34105.
Visitation will be at 7:00 pm with a Prayer Service starting at 7:30 P.M. Friday, March 2, 2018 at Sts. Anne and Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo.

Nan, there aren’t words to say enough for all that you must be experiencing. When I saw your wedding picture, it took me back to UND in an instant. What a great couple! You two were always an item. We all loved you and Bruce very much. You were such a strong woman to care for him and stand by him during what must have been a very difficult time. I think it made all the difference for him. We are thinking of you and your family tonight, Nan, as we just learned of Bruce’s passing. We will always remember how much fun we had with you both during our spring trip together to Daffodil Festival and can see Bruce now making new friends during the car parade/picnic with the celebratory champagne ladies in Sconset! Condolences from Ron Johnson. I worked for IMA at the Barnesville Area Clinic. I was sorry to read of Bruce’s recent illness and death. I also had family members see him at the emergency room at Lake Region Healthcare. A donation is being given to Lake Region Cancer Center In his memory.

Nan and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Bruce for many years. 9 yrs ago,. My husband died of pancreatic cancer too. I know first hand what ur family went thru. Life is just so not fair sometimes. Didn’t know ur in Naples. I live in Madeira beach. Thinking of you.
I worked with Dr Carlisle at Lake Region Hospital from about 2000 till my ‘retirement’ in 2008. Bruce was an excellent, efficient, and compassionate physician. I was always pleased to visit with him in our Doctors’ Lounge at LRHC.

I am so sorry to hear of the early in life loss of your loving husband. I will always cherish the memories of working with both of you and all that you did to give others a better understanding of mental illness and the support for Mental Health services. There will be a special place in heaven for Bruce. And lastly life is just not fair. But you are so strong, and with God’s help you will survive , stronger than ever.

I’m stunned. It’s two years after Bruce’s death and I just found out. I was getting ready to send him my book about 65 years of hunting adventures. Bruce got me and Russ Fortner started snow goose hunting in 1975. I wanted him to have the book as a “thank you.” I guess not. But, I will thank you, Bruce, for getting me started on a sport that I still enjoy. I wish you were still here to read the stories.
