Carlos “Gus” Waldo Nestler Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024. He was 84 years old.

Gus was born on August 25, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Carlos Waldo Nestler and Marion E. Wood Nestler. He spent his childhood in Edina and Wayzata, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. Gus attended Shattuck High School, in Faribault, MN, graduating in 1959. He was a member of the Crack Squad and wrestled for the school team. After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army.

Following his military service, Gus met the love of his life, Mary Kay DeJardine. They married on September 5, 1964, and made their home in Fargo, North Dakota. Gus had a successful career in sales, working for Morton Salt Company, American Salt Company, and Irrigation Systems Inc. He later found a new calling in law enforcement, serving as a deputy with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department from December 1989 until his retirement in February 2007.

Gus was a man of many talents and interests. He was a skilled hunter and fisherman, and his passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for Many Point Lake, where he spent countless happy hours with his family. He was known for his quick wit and infectious humor, always ready to share a joke. In retirement, Gus honed his artistic skills, becoming a talented carver, sketcher, and photographer.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Mildred, his beloved wife, Mary Kay, his sister, Marilyn Allen, and his many loyal canine companions, most recently Lady. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Nestler; his son, Carlos W. Nestler III (Nicole); his grandsons, Caden and Colten Nestler; his sister, Audra Holm along with many nieces and nephews.

Gus will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and unwavering loyalty. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

A celebration of Gus’s life will be held on July 15th at 2:00 at Boulger Funeral Home. In keeping with Gus’s love for blue cheese and grape drink, we invite you to share these treats with us in fellowship after the service.
