Catherine A. McMullen

January 1, 1929 ~ October 4, 2026

Born in: Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Catherine A. McMullen, 97, Fargo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at St. Catherine North in Fargo.

Catherine was born on January 1, 1929, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Patrick and Gertrude (DeLaney) Stevens. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1947, where she met her future husband, John McMullen. The two were married on September 30, 1950, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

Following their marriage, Catherine and John made their home in Fargo, where Catherine devoted herself to raising their family as a stay-at-home mother.
Catherine loved playing bridge, but golf was especially close to her heart. She was active in the women’s golf league at Edgewood Golf Course and spent many enjoyable days on the course. Catherine and John also shared a love of travel, particularly their trips to Texas, where they could spend time together and enjoy plenty of golf. Above all, Catherine treasured her family and took great pride in being involved in the many activities of her children and grandchildren throughout the years.

Her faith and church were also an important part of Catherine’s life. She was always willing to lend a hand, including helping with the church laundry, something she affectionately referred to as “washing God’s clothes.”

John passed away in 1989.

Catherine is survived by her children, Pat (Shirley) McMullen, Tim McMullen, Dan McMullen, Mary (Wes) Braunberger, Mark (Pauline) McMullen, and Ann (John) Zetocha; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Gertrude Stevens; and her husband, John McMullen.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Aunt Katie will always be remembered with love. Her visits to Greenville to see Dennis and JoAnne brought many happy times and cherished family memories. The days spent playing golf with her were especially special, filled with laughter and good company.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
    Amen.

    Paul and Karen McMullen

  2. Dear McMullen Family,
My sympathies to you all at the loss of your dear Mom. She, like many of the moms of her generation, was full of energy and seemed to be always on the go! It was always a pleasure to see her at St. Anthony’s. She was ever ready with a cheerie greeting and a sincere inquiry about how things were going. I know you will miss her physical presence but I am sure her joyful spirit with always be with you. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. Blessings, Cecelia (Colby) O’Keefe

  3. Dear McMullen Family; We met Shirley and John years ago as fellow parishoners at St. Anthony’s. Katie was a force of nature, and I am smiling thinking about her. What a life she had!
Our prayers are with all of you at this time.

    Earl and Bev Wenthin

  4. I met Katie recently when my mom moved to St. Catherine’s and became her roommate. She was very welcoming and sweet. She asked our names and told my 13 year old her name was beautiful. I didn’t get the chance to know her but from the sounds of it she was a remarkable lady. We are so sorry for your loss.

  5. So sorry for your loss. Katie and I spent many hours playing golf together over the years.
Katie was a joy to be with. Rest in peace. Blessings to the family. Wes and Vivian
