Christopher L. Westerholm

Christopher Lee Westerholm, 53, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Born on December 12, 1972, Chris was the beloved son of the late Duane R. and late JoAnn M. Westerholm of Fargo, North Dakota.

Chris graduated from Fargo North High School in 1992 and continued his education at an academy in Minneapolis for two years. After completing his studies, he moved into New Horizons Manor in North Fargo-his lifelong home- where he was supported by dedicated caregivers from CLS (Community Living Services). It was there that he formed lasting friendships and became a cherished part of the community.

Chris worked at VTC (Vocational Training Center), where he handled payroll on the computer for many years. When his position was discontinued, he retired but continued attending VTC for the activities he enjoyed and the companionship it provided.

Despite the physical challenges of cerebral palsy, Chris never allowed his condition to define him or limit his determination. His stubborn spirit-one of his most endearing qualities- helped him face obstacles head-on throughout his life. Even after many hospital stays over the years, Chris always found a way to rebound and grow stronger.

Chris had a lifelong passion for horses-riding was always on his mind- and he loved watching rodeos. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family at events and looked forward to outings at Borrowed Bucks when it was open. Basketball of any kind was a favorite, especially attending Bison games. He loved bowling and proudly won trophies over the years. Chris also competed in the Special Olympics and the Able Games, accomplishments he cherished.

He enjoyed Red Hawks baseball, concerts, game shows, The Three Stooges, and his favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives. Chris had an incredible memory for dates and never forgot a birthday or anniversary. Saturdays were reserved for his “happy place,” West Acers Mall. He loved driving his wheelchair through the mall, stopping to chat with the many people who knew him, using his talking board to share a conversation or a laugh. He rode the para-transit bus there and knew the drivers as well-he loved their jokes and the camaraderie with them and other riders.

Throughout his life, Chris had many angels watching over him, beginning with his parents, who advocated fiercely for him. His mother understood him better than anyone. Along the way, countless people helped him-family members, teachers, therapists, salespeople, barbers, caregivers and staff at CLS and VTC, bus drivers, strangers whose names we will never know, and many dear friends. Their kindness shaped his life, and he felt every bit of it.

Two very special angels deserve mention.

The first is Mark Puppe, Chris’s pal since grade school. Mark stayed in touch throughout the years and always looked out for him. He took Chris to many places, including planning for their Fargo North High School reunion and, most recently, to “Cowboy Up” in McLeod, ND. Mark went above and beyond to make sure Chris could be there in his wheelchair, something Chris deeply appreciated.

The second is John Brandt, who worked with Chris for 30 years. They shared a remarkable bond. Chris loved it when John had shifts with him-John always made him laugh. Their silly antics and playful tricks were legendary. Chris would get excited the day before John’s shift, already plotting how he might get him back. Their friendship brought joy to both of them.

Chris is survived by his sister Linda (Ken) Pettie; brother Paul (Jill) Westerholm; nephews Colton Pettie and Adam Westerholm, and niece Hannah Westerholm. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews from both the Westerholm and Teigen families-all of whom he loved dearly.

With his infectious laughter, great sense of humor, and quiet resolve, Chris taught everyone around him patience and unconditional love. His absence leaves a tremendous void, and he is already missed beyond measure.

A Celebration of Chris’ Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour prior.
