Dale Michael Duval, born in Moorhead, MN to Roger and Dorothy (Symanietz) Duval, and raised in Fargo, ND. Dale passed away surrounded by his family, following a one-month courageous battle with lung cancer.

Dale built a life defined by kindness, curiosity, and a heart that never stopped giving. He was known instantly by his smile — warm, genuine, and offered freely. He had a big heart, a gentle spirit, and a passion for life that drew people in. He listened deeply, cared fully, and had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen. He was also a joyful fount of useless information, a title he embraced with pride and humor.

Dale was a proud graduate of Shanley High School’s Class of 1979. He spent his entire career in the food industry, where he built lasting relationships and earned the respect of colleagues who admired his work ethic, loyalty, and steady presence.

Dale lived life with enthusiasm. He loved golfing at Edgewood, with friends that spanned 40+ years, tending to his (many, many) aquariums (did I say many?), riding his e bike (like a minibike), traveling, gardening, classic car shows, watching car races and any sport he could find. His hobbies weren’t just pastimes — they were expressions of his curiosity, his joy, and his appreciation for the world around him.

Above all else, Dale cherished his family. He was the best husband, stepdad, and grandpa Dale — roles he embraced with devotion and tenderness. He was also a beloved sibling, nephew, cousin, and uncle to many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews. His wide network of family and friends meant everything to him, and he nurtured those connections with intention and love.

Dale married the love of his life, Renée, on August 14, 2021. Their years together were filled with laughter, partnership, and a deep, abiding affection that will continue to guide and comfort her.

Dale leaves behind a legacy of kindness, passion, and generosity — a life lived with an open heart and a spirit that touched everyone, fortunate enough to know him.

He will be profoundly missed.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Dorothy; and father-in-law Theodore Haats.

Dale is survived by his loving wife, Renée, and a family he cared for deeply. He leaves behind his stepchildren, Camie Christensen (Marco Riboli) of Bergamo, Italy; Tessa (Mickey) Rivera of Seattle, WA; and Sean (Martha) Christensen of Fargo, ND. Dale took great pride in his grandchildren—Diego and Lucas Riboli, baby girl Rivera who will join the family in September, and Juniper Christensen. He is also survived by his siblings, David (Sally) Duval of West Fargo, ND; Janice (Larry) Olson of Moorhead, MN; Kerry (Alison) Duval of Moorhead, MN; and Kelly (Debbie) Duval of Hardin, KY. In addition, he is remembered by his mother-in-law, Clarice Haats of Green Bay, WI, and by his brother- and sister-in-law, Robert (Cynthia) Haats of Green Bay, WI.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Dale was soooo very very kind and a pillar of my aquatic plant life. I learned so much from him. I remember buying a 5 gal bucket of plant from him at JL Beers and us both chewing out the staff for not letting us us a knife to cut out sandwich in half lol. Dale made our local aquarium group whole. Would give kids free plants at every swap because he would rather get someone into the hobby than make money. Great man, I’ll miss him lots.

  2. I grew up with Dale & his twin brothers Kelly & Kerry on the 700 block of 3rd & 4th Street North Fargo. We played fast pitch softball together for many years on the Amvets. He was the best teammate anybody could ask for. Such a kind & genuine person. I’m saddened immensely to hear of his passing. RIP Dale, you were 1 of a kind & will be missed… My condolences to the family.

  3. Dale was like the teasing, pesty little brother as I first engaged with his special family. They have all continued to be very special to me. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Dale as adults and was able to see and experience the man he became. Kind and gentle. I enjoyed that he found the love of his life in Renee and watched their adventures together. I am so saddened by his sudden passing. Love to all the Duval family.

  4. Renee, Jan, and all of Dale’s family. Just sending my heartfelt sympathy to you all. It was always evident how happy Dale and Renee were together and we were pleased to see them surrounding each other with love. Take comfort in all the memories he brought all of you with his beautiful life. Hold tight to that love and know you are surrounded by love and prayers of family and friends.

  5. I worked with Dale for many many years at the FCC. We had some great times and we had some tense times, that’s the restaurant business. Through it all we felt like a family and I feel losing Dale as I would losing a family member.I am heartbroken as everyone is.
Rest well Dale, hope you’re riding your big red bike.

  6. Janice,
I was so sorry to read if Dale’s passing. I remember him well from our younger years and whenever we saw each other he still remembered me and we would visit a bit. Thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family.
    Merlee
