Change of address! Dan slipped the surly bonds of Earth and rose on eagle’s wings to his new home in Heaven. Dan was born on April 19, 1964 in Fargo, ND. His parents are Jerry and Mary (Fosteson) Schutz, Detroit Lakes, MN. He was the youngest of four boys and attended St. Anthony’s grade school and graduated from the Anne Carlson School in Jamestown, ND. Dan took some college courses in Billings, MT where he lived most of is adult life before moving back to Fargo in 2015. Dan rarely complained that he was paralyzed from the waist down. That was just part of who he was. His three brothers never allowed him to be spoiled and they were great at including him in their activities. While at the Anne Carlson School, Dan played basketball for four years. He also entered competitions in the Handicap Olympics where he took fourth in the nation in bench pressing in Urbana, IL; second in Marshall, MN; and third in Seattle, WA. Weighing 108 lbs, he pressed 235 lbs. Sports were a love of his. He played wheelchair basketball again when he moved to Billings. His teammates said he was the fastest wheelchair player they had seen. Dancing was another love of his. He’d pop a wheelie and dance for fast dances and for slow dances, his girl would sit in his lap while he moved his chair to the beat of the music. While in Billings, Dan participated in all three legs of the Peaks to the Prairie race, an 8.8 mile run in his wheelchair up in the peaks near Red Lodge, the 40.5 mile bike ride to Laurel on his hand-propelled 3-wheel bike and the 2-man 22.2 mile canoe race on the Yellowstone River to Billings. But Dan’s favorite sport was skiing at Red Lodge. He skied all the runs including moguls and double black diamond runs on a mono-ski. Dan had many friends and loved to travel. When games were played everyone wanted Dan on their team because of his extensive knowledge of trivia. Dan was the sunshine in the room wherever people gathered. He is survived by his parents; his brother, Mark (Lana) of Fargo; Mike (Ann) of Fargo; and Tim (Kristi) of Monument, CO; seven nieces and nephews: David, Amanda, Ericka, Sarah, Jessica, Jacob, and Elijah; their spouses and children; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Bertha Schutz and Francis and Virginia Fosteson; and nephew and namesake, Daniel Austin Schutz. There will be a casual Celebration of Life from 7-8:30 PM on Friday, June 11 at Dike East Park, 100 2nd St S in Fargo. There will be a public memorial Mass at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Fargo with a visitation one hour prior.

  6. Dan was a very important part of my life. We had drifted apart over these past few years. I knew that it was hard for him to keep in touch but would’ve enjoyed having him here at my home on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Had offered for him to come spend Easter with my family and I. Had really tried to keep in touch with him but was unaware of how bad his condition had progressed. He will be missed by all that knew him. He was like my Dad because he was my Godfather. I spent many of my days and years with him watching TV and going out to eat. Helping him with keeping his apartment cleaned up and taking out his trash. And when I got older we would even go out to the bar together and sometimes barely make it back to his apartment because we were walking. God has him now but I know I can’t wait to see him again in Heaven. My deepest condolence to all his family and friends and everyone that he knew in his life. He was truly a light that always burned it brightest all the time. I love you Dan and I miss you!!!!

  7. Mary, Jerry, Mike, Mark, Tim, and all the rest of the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Dan was an extraordinary man, wonderful friend, and amazing Godfather to Aaron, he will be greatly missed. I am so glad he moved back so the last leg of his journey on this side was spent with you, and I am eternally grateful for all the time I had with him before he moved back. We had quite an adventure together in this life and I wouldn’t change a moment of it. He lived life to the fullest and his smile was contagious. I really wish I could come out, but unfortunately I committed to working before I heard the news, but my heart is there with all of you. I truly love all of you, you have been the extra family I needed thru so much of my life. Huge hugs to all of you.

  8. What an extraordinary life Dan lived. I remember how enthusiastic he was as a young man and how his brothers and all the neighborhood included him. I had no idea that exuberance for life at a young age allowed him to accomplish so many wonderful things later in life. I’m jealous of his ability to dive down a Black Diamond run on one and everything else he accomplished in such a short life. My prayers are with all the Schultz family members and Dan’s friends!

  9. My condolences to all of the Schutz family. I have fond memories of Danny and the Schutz boys at St. Anthony’s and later at Shanley. May you find peace in God’s promise of eternal life.

  10. Danny and I grew up together in Fargo on 4th avenue. We quickly became best of friends, spent a lot of time together. I have many awesome memories of him and I. Prayers and hugs to his family.

  11. Dan was one of my favorite customers in our antique mall, Marketplace 3301, in Billings. I looked forward to his visits and our chats about everything under the sun. Always enjoyed his wry sense of humor. Please accept my deepest sympathies…and know that Dan will not be forgotten!

  12. To all of you, my deepest sympathy. While it was a long time ago, I still remember Danny as a fifth grader at St. Anthony’s. He was a delightful child with a sweet personality. He never gave up and was determined to engage in all activities. Any frustration just made him work harder and he embraced challenge. I was fortunate to have been his teacher.
I hope that loving memories of Danny bring you comfort at this time and that those memories remain strong forever.

  13. Dear Schutz Family, Earl and I want to extend our sympathy at your loss of Dear Danny. We remember him as a child at St. Anthony’s. Barry, Tracey, and Kerry thought he was a fabulous kid. We did too. The kids would come home with ” Danny Stories” of the ways he would navigate school. They were in awe of his attitude. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.
Danny will be waiting for all of us in Heaven. God bless you all

  14. I used to enjoy watching different music events with Dan.
Everyone in Billings has missed him since he moved away. He was always smiling and I liked him very much.

  15. Dan was a close and trusted friend to many of us in Billings Montana. We saw him attend every concert and street dance that was h eff ld here. Dan was always upbeat and eager to participate in any social event that we had. He was a regular at the RodDogs fieldmeets. Many of us gave Dan rides home after a night of dancing and partying at local bars.
I saw him in the audience when I played guitar at Casey’s Golden pheasant bar in Billings, and he always had a kind encouraging word for me after my performances. We spent many hours just talking. He will be missed by all of us here who knew him.
    RIP brother,…..Carlos

  16. I have such wonderful memories of Mark caring Danny, on his back up the marble staircase , at St Anthony’s grade school. The brothers had a special bond, everyday they were an example of our Catholic faith. God bless all of your family at this difficult time. Sincerely Jane

  17. Hey Dan,
Haven’t seen ya for many years, but Thanks for giving me some laughs & dances while I was in Billings. You were an amazing guy with the ability to always make me feel better and make me laugh.
    Fly High My Buddy.
    Your Friend Cam

  18. Seeing young Dan’s kind face in his photo made me smile. Always soft mannered and friendly as a grade schooler at St. A’s and I’d seek him out for an always genuine chat. God bless him and all of you as you maneuver life without this light of a man and brother.

  19. I got to know Dan in my years working in durable medical equipment. Dan was an inspiration for many, always had a smile on his face, a kind heart and a great man. He did not let that wheelchair define him. My thoughts and prayers to his family & friends. Bev W

  20. Dan blessed the lives of all who knew him with laughter and inspiration! The Jones-Olson family treasures the time we spent “blended” together with Dan and the Schutzs in Billings. We hope he keeps dancing across the universe and that he and Ed Jones find each other in heaven. We will always smile when we think of how Dan warmed our hearts. Love to you, Merry Lee and family

  21. God Bless you Jerry and Mary and family! Love and prayers are with you. God bless you.

    With deepest sympathy,
    Joni Carr.

  22. My condolences over Dan’s passing. I see now he had a wonderful life. I remember him from when I taught at St. Anthony’s and he was a younger student.
I was amazed how he could get along without using a wheel chair and his brothers were so helpful in his needs.
Above all he was matter of fact and cheerful.
God’s blessings on him in eternity and on his loving family and friends.
    In sympathy,
    Sister Bernadette

  23. We send our love to all of Dan’s family and especially to Jerry and Mary. Everyone will miss his constant smile and welcoming ways. He was a true friend and hero to so many in Billings.

We have been blessed with a grandson so like Dan. Ever smiling and hopeful and also gifted with a brother to lift him and share his life.

Love and prayers to all of you. Kay and Mike

  24. I really want to talk to each one of you but I can’t find numbers. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Your family was a very important part of our growing up and Dan was special with his interactions and a good teacher. I would just love to reach out and talk to you. I was out of town or I would have been at that funeral. You are all important to me. God bless you and you grieve your loss. My love and prayers! Sister Stella Olson, PBVM

  25. Danny was a classmate of mine at the Anne Carlsen School. We went to high school together. We graduated high school together. We played basketball together. We even were prom king and queen together. I googled his name to see if I could find out where he was and what he was doing and was shocked to find his obituary. He was a funny, good looking guy and a good friend. We shared a lot of great times in high school.

  26. Though I only knew Danny from back in the day at St. Anthony’s as Tim’s younger brother, I remember him as a smiling, upbeat guy who had a unique ability to inspire those around him. It would’ve been my sincere pleasure to have met him once again as an adult and shake his hand. My condolences to the Schutz family and all of Danny’s friends and loved ones.
