On November 20, 2020, we lost a one of a kind character in Dan Utke. Daniel was born October 8, 1937 at home near Lucca, ND to Erwin Utke and Doris Lindemann Utke, the oldest of eleven children. He was baptized at Pontiac Lutheran Church in rural Enderlin. He attended Rariton School through eighth grade. Then the family moved to rural Enderlin, ND. Dan helped build the house that now stands there. Dan was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Enderlin. He joined the Air Force in 1959 and was stationed in Denver, CO until 1961. He studied avionics and radar at Wahpeton State School of Science from 1961-1963. He married Diane Polloch in March of 1961. Twin boys, Ronald and Donald, came from that union. Dan then joined the North Dakota Air National Guard 119th fighter wing (The Happy Hooligans) in 1963 where he worked as a radar tech for. He worked for the fire department on base. He was also the only German-speaking person on staff there. In 1968 he married Yvonne Gire and three children, Julie, Steve, and Matt came from that union. They lived in Horace, ND until 1976, and then moved to rural Detroit Lakes, MN where they lived until 1992, when they moved to Enderlin, ND. Dan retired from the Guard in 1990 and went to work for Mid-America Aviation. After a few years, Dan left to work as a “drug runner” for a pharmaceutical company in Fargo. He worked for the Soo Line railroad, picking up people and bringing them to the different locations where the trains would pick them up. He also drove beet trucks for Johannason’s beet farms for twenty five years. Dan liked to tinker with anything that had grease, oil, a motor, and speed. It didn’t matter if it had wings or tires, it just had to be loud and fast. When people would ask Dan what he did for a living, he told them he turned jet fuel into noise .Among his many hobbies, he collected antique cars. His pride and joy was his 1908 Sears, which came from Fingal. ND. He was a lifelong member of the Horseless Carriage Club of America, Fargo Group. He enjoyed taking his Sears to car shows in the tri-state area. He twice drove his Sears across the stage at the Medora Musical as oldest car present. Yvonne actually twisted his arm and got him to travel to Mesa, AZ and Branson, MO for some retirement time. Dan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Yvonne, his son Ronny, daughter, Julie, son Steve and daughter-in-law Kay, and son D. Matthew, and grandchildren Brandan and Kasey, Donnie Jr, Kelly, Ronnie Jr, and Sarah, and brothers David (Caroline) and Mike (Donna), and Alanna (Jim) Woell, Maria Utke, Robin (Al) Roder, and Suzie Utke, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers, and his son Donnie. Daniel's Video Tribute can be viewed below:

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Remembering and sending condolences to family and friends of Dan: I remember Dan from the Happy Hooligans where we served for several years. Dan had a very quiet demeanor and was always seemed to be in deep meaningful thought. He was always cooperative and friendly. God speed Dan….

  2. My condolences to the family of Dan on your loss. I served with Dan in The Happy Hooligans, and in recent years often saw him at retiree breakfast. I will miss Dan’s quiet peaceful presence. Rest in peace, Dan

  3. They broke mold after Dan arrived. He was one of the most colorful Hooligans to grace Hector Field. Before and after retirement, Dan was forever the source of interesting trivia, having such a natural view of the world. I enjoyed—very much—our brief encounters at the Credit Union. A sort of “mystery man”, Dan just was a wonderful spice to life not found in many. Go forth, Dan Utke, and conquer your next world!

  4. From the Clemenson family of Horace we want you to know that we are sorry for your loss. Dan was a good friend.

  5. I had the honor of working with Dan in the fire department. My favorite memory of him is sitting in the kitchen of the fire station the day of the annual chili contest. His entry was always one of the hottest. I can picture him now with sweat running down his head as he proclaimed that his wasn’t hot at all. I have shared stories of Dan’s adventures with many people over the years, as he was one of a kind. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

  6. Deepest sympathy to you, Yvonne and family.
Remembering times spent together at the guard base…always something that surprised us or maybe scared us a bit. Dan was one of the first people to welcome me into the Avionics Shop. We always enjoyed the time our two families spent together.

  7. Dan was one of the most intelligent persons I’ve ever met. He marched to his own drums and was an absolute pleasure to work with and have known. He will be missed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a sad day indeed, see you later old friend!

  8. I will always remember Dan teasing us kids at the annual Christmas Eve gathering at Aunt Mamie’s. It was so impossible to tell when he was teasing and when he was being serious because he had an amazing “poker” face. I wish we could be with you at the funeral, Vonnie. Sending prayers.

  9. Yvonne and Family …. May the Lord grant you comfort knowing that Dan is with the Lord. Love you, Sue Christianson

  10. Dear Yvonne and family, Our thoughts and prayers after hearing about your loss of Dan. May you find comfort cherishing the endless memories that were produced throughout the years. May God give you strength during this challenging time in your lives. 11. Yvonne and Family: May God cradle you in his arms and give you comfort. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  13. Our deepest condolences to the Utke family Dan welcomed us to North Dakota and he will be truly missed. He was the true definition of a friend. Always there to help and standby ones side. If it had a motor, gears or mechanical motion he could figure out how it worked.
    Good bye my friend.

  14. Thinking of you Yvonne,Julie,Steve&Matt. So sorry to hear. But if anyone was destined to live heartily in people’s memory it is Dan. Love Berta.

  15. Condolences to Dan’s family. I enjoyed the time I was able to share with Dan at the HAPPY HOOLIGANS.
Lots of interesting stories he had to tell of his experiences and I got to share a few of those experience when we went sightseeing during deployments. A great friend who will be missed by all who knew him but never forgotten.
