On December 23, 2022, Darlene Shear passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Her final days were spent at the Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, North Dakota, after a severe fall with a head injury. Darlene was born to Walter and Beata Hink on July 2, 1933. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. James Lutheran, a small country church near Parkers Prairie, Minnesota. On July 5, 1950, she married Alfred Shear, making their home in Fargo, North Dakota. She was blessed with six wonderful children. As a stay-at-home mom, her job description included nurse, accountant, child psychologist, chef, seamstress, caregiver, teacher, and so much more. Her interests over the years included crocheting, reading, puzzles, and Bible studies. She was the biggest supporter of her husband and her family. Darlene was the matriarch of her family, keeping them all connected throughout the years. She was always available for a listening ear, a heartfelt conversation, and a comforting hug. Darlene was steadfast in her faith, she lived simply, and she loved her family deeply.

She completed her journey to her eternal home just in time for Christmas, where she was happily greeted by her husband; her parents; her son, Jim; her siblings and in-laws – Roger Hink, Elvera (Raymond) Brockopp, and Gladys (Lloyd) Dawson; and many other relatives and friends. She is survived by her daughters – Phyllis (Jon) Hanson, Diane (Ken) Rheault, Kathleen (Tim) Bishoff, Janet (Dick) Fedje, and Jody (Craig) Talley. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Jeremy (Angela) Hanson, Laura (Phil) Hatcher, Kari (Kurt Datz) Hanson, Ben (Tess Varner) Rheault, Dan (Taylor) Rheault, Angela Bishoff, Katie (Andy) Bolland, Tom (Richelle) Bishoff, Jacob Fedje, Arika (Jack) Brodshaug, Brianne (Jordan) Lee, Landon (Kayla Dease) Fedje, Taylor Blakeway, Matt (Karlee Halvorson) Talley, Ashlie (Sean) Kunkel; as well as 17 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her sister-in-law, Adeline Hink; and many nieces and nephews.

  2. I spent a lot of time at the Shear house as a kid. Darlene was like a second mother to me. I loved her dearly. Such a kind , compassionate person. Rest in Peace Darlene. You touched so many people’s lives by the way you lived your own.

  3. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time. What a beautiful person and a beautiful soul.

  4. Thinking of all you girls. It’s hard to say goodbye. Celebrate her life as well , for we know how this story ends. I to have such awesome memories of spending the 4th of July at your home. God bless and grant you his peace that surpasses all understanding

  5. I used to sit with Darlene in church. Her family, and mine grew up 4 doors apart, so we knew each other quite well. We always had fun at parties, and get togethers. I will miss calling her, and chatting. She will be missed for sure.

  6. I was saddened to read of your mother’s passing. My thoughts are with you Diane, Kathy, Janet and Jody, and families.
