David Cunningham, age 74, Fargo, formerly of Bismarck, ND, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his home in Fargo under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2005. David John Cunningham was born October 6, 1930, in Oakes, ND, to George and Myrtle Larson Cunningham. He began school and spent his formative years in LaMoure, ND. In 1947, he moved with his parents to Washburn, ND, graduating from high school there in 1948. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he spent four years aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway. After his honorable discharge he enrolled at Loyola University, Chicago, IL. He later transferred to St. John?s University, Collegeville, MN, from where he graduated in 1956. David?s career was spent in the employment of the State Health Department in Bismarck from 1963-1995. He retired as the Director of Maternal and Child Health. The couple then moved to Fargo where he was a member of St. Anthony?s Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, and did much volunteer work, including with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Shortly before the U.S.S. Midway was decommissioned and moved to dry-dock at San Diego, CA, David was one of many attending a reunion of shipmates in Norfolk, VA. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Philip; and a sister, Genevieve Richards. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Kay; son, John Cunningham of Houston, TX; daughter, Julie Chapman (David) of Fargo; grandson, Christopher of Houston, TX; two brothers, Robert (Marilyn) of Bismarck and Terry (Elaine) of Bismarck; and sister-in-law, Juleen of Bismarck.
