David Engen, age 69, passed peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2024, at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, ND, under the care of the Hospice House.
A lifelong Hillsboro resident, David graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1972, and after attending Wahpeton State School of Science, he began a career driving semi, following in the footsteps of his uncle Cliff Engen. David worked for a number of local firms, hauling different products across the United States. David finished his career at Newman Trucking, in Clifford, ND, where he loved his job and coworkers. They were a second family to him. Health issues forced him to retire in 2019, and for the last four years David lived in Kiwanis housing in Hillsboro, where he made a number of new friends.
David was a model train enthusiast and more recently, enjoyed computer gaming, and his bookcase was filled with adventure novels. He also enjoyed collecting action comic books and had an interest in classic cars. As a youngster, he enjoyed family driving trips, Twins baseball games at the Met, and summer visits to his aunt’s Ottertail Lake home. Along with his mother, David also liked spending time researching his family’s genealogy.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Alice (Benson) Engen, as well as a number of extended family members. He is survived by three cousins, Barb (Don) Halverson, Glenn (Carol) Dahlstrom, and Darlene Melsby.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sanford Broadway Hospital for the wonderful care David received and the kindness shown by all the caregivers at Sanford Hospice House. A thank you also for the help and concern David received from the staff at Traill County Health and Hillsboro Sanford clinic.
A celebration of life gathering will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Wildeman-Boulger Funeral Home, Hillsboro, from 2-4 pm. Burial will be held at a later date.
