David passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home, surrounded by his family, at the age of 71.

David James Sundeen was born on October 11, 1950, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Louis and Rose Sundeen of Buxton, ND.

Dave had many struggles with cancer in his lifetime – first was being born with it and losing his right eye at three years of age – then the second eye at the age of ten. He attended school in Bathgate, ND, until the new School for Blind was built in Grand Forks.

Dave joined the Cub Scouts Pack 586 in Buxton, then went on to Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout. After, he graduated High School in 1973, at 22 years of age, after starting first grade over as a ten-year-old. He later attended Devils Lake Regional Junior College for two years, before continuing his education at UND. He majored in special education and became employed at the LISTEN Center for mentally Handicapped, until funding was stopped and was volunteer only.

From 1982 until 2020, he attended Ski for Light, every January with his own ski guide, bringing home trophies year after year to display in his home. He loved being accompanied by his nephew, Shawn, first on the bus, then the last years Shawn drove him to Deadwood, SD. His interests in skiing and sports (being an avid Yankee’s Fan) and promoting activity for the blind and handicapped earned him a trip to Disney World, sponsored by Thousand Points of Light, where all of his needs and meals were provided. Sadly only 30 out of 575 had the honor of shaking President Bush’s hand.
Besides Dave’s love for Ski for Light, he was also a guidance counselor every summer at Camp Grassick at Lake Isabelle. Besides skiing, dancing, and singing, Dave loved music – the early Beatle’s and Elvis – listening to his talking books, along with Yankees baseball and Packers Football.

Love you, Dave! We will miss you!

Dave is survived by his sister, Valerie Gunderson of Buxton, ND; and his brother, Danny (Vicki) Sundeen of Royce City, TX; his eight nieces and nephews – Jim Gunderson of Climax, MN; Shawn Gunderson of Reynolds, ND; Korey Gunderson of Mantador, ND; Brett (Beth) Sundeen of Buxton, ND; Heidy (Ty) Snyder of Royce City, TX; Steven (Tina) Sundeen of Lancaster, OH; Richard (Jennifer) Sundeen of Hillsboro, ND; Nichole Hansen of Fargo, ND; and many great nieces and nephews, and his very good friend, Carroll Christy.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Rose Sundeen; his brother, Roger Sundeen; Brother-in-law, Gayhart Gunderson; his nephew, Shane Sundeen; and Jamie Gunderson, wife of his nephew, Korey Gunderson.
Dave was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

The family gratefully acknowledges your attendance and many kind expressions of sympathy during this time of loss and invite you to join them for lunch and fellowship following the service.
Interment will take place later by immediate family and close friends at the Soderberg Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Hillsboro Nursing Home and Hospice for their loving care and kindness.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I remember when SFL took 10 participants to Disney where SFL was named the 80th point of light. One of Dave’s highlights was petting the dolphins at Sea World and riding in an airboat in the Everglades

  2. So sorry for your loss and sending lots of hugs and prayers to a great friend thank you so much for making the light brighter in my life

  3. We met Dave when we started attending Ski for Light in the late 1980’s. He found a friend in everyone he met. He will be greatly missed. So sorry for your loss.

  4. Dave was one of a kind. He will be missed. I hope our stories and love give a measure of comfort. I will never forget his NDakota accent and his sense of humor.

  5. Dave was a treasured friend. Camp Grassick will never be the same without him there. I have many, many fond memories of him that I’ll treasure forever. I feel blessed to have known him. May God hold him in the palm of His hands. I love you, Dave.

  6. The North Dakota Association of the Blind would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Dave’s family. Dave was a great friend to many of our members and brought a smile to many faces. He will be missed at many of our events, especially at Camp and Ski for Light. He has touched so many in a positive way. May he rest in eternal peace.
