David "Schmitty" Schmidt
November 13, 1947 ~ June 13, 2024
David’s service will be livestreamed below at 10 am, Friday, June 21, 2024
David (Schmitty) Bruce Schmidt, 76, died peacefully on June 13, 2024 at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND, after years of chronic illnesses. He was born on November 13, 1947 to Merl and Inez (Buss) Schmidt. Dave grew up on a farm near Enderlin, ND, where he also attended his school years, graduating in 1965. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force, completing his enlistment on 2/10/1970. He served most of his time at Norton Air Force Base in California, where he also met his previous wife (and her 2 young boys). They were married on January 10, 1970 and when he was honorably discharged, they moved to North Dakota where 2 daughters were welcomed to the family, Shannon (1971) and Keri (1980).
Dave began a career at United Parcel Service in July of 1971 and retired due to medical reasons in May of 1998. After retirement, he greatly enjoyed assisting farmers that he met throughout the years with fall harvest and driving the big tractors.
Prior to chronic illnesses, Dave had a great love for snowmobiling and very much enjoyed deer hunting and especially pheasant hunting. He also participated in Trap Shooting competitions and very much enjoyed time at the shooting park near Horace, ND. He loved his Chevy Tahoe’s and toy tractors. Of course, he would never pass up a Dairy Queen strawberry shake (no whipped topping of course).
Nothing brought a smile to his face and lit up his eyes like his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was extremely proud of all his grandchildren’s accomplishments and was particularly proud of Megan’s current service in the ND Army National Guard and honor to serve our country.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Merl and Inez Schmidt, brother Larry Schmidt and 1st granddaughter Jessica Jo Donahue (1/3/89-1/5/19), several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Shannon (Tim) Dennison, Fargo, ND, grandchildren Alex (Shanah) Donahue, their sons Ethan and Ezra; Megan (Taylor) Dwyer, their children, Emersyn and Nolan; Benjamin (Lily) Donahue; and daughter Keri Dodd, Sioux Falls, SD, her children Xavier Stilwell and Sophia Dodd; stepsons, John (Shelly) Brower, Emerado, ND, their children, Matthew, Virginia, Sebastian, Dominick and Bob (Jodell) Brower, Mandan, ND, daughter Lindsay and son David Brower (and his family); sister Norma (Gary) Anderson of Sheldon, ND; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, niece, nephews and friends.
The Lions Gift of Sight has received Dave’s corneas to provide sight for another individual(s).
David’s daughters would like to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Fargo VA Medical Center, Essentia Health in Fargo, New Perspectives, and all our wonderful family and friends for their support during this time of mourning and finally to Boulger Funeral Home.

So sorry to see Dave has passed away. I know from occasional visits he’s been in a lot of pain. Good to know he’s free of pain. Sorry for your loss Norma.
Rest in peace Dave. You are pain free and are safe in The Lords arms. Say hi to Jess

Dave was such a kind man. I enjoyed meeting and caring for him at Edgewood. His family was pretty special too. So sorry for your loss! I will always remember him ❤️
I am so sorry to hear about Schmitty. It’s a small world but he lived down the block from me and we’d visit frequently on the sidewalk. Unbeknownst to either of us, we both graduated from Enderlin and I knew Shannon and her kids from Moorhead Schools. Wish we could have made that connection. My deepest sympathy to all of you.
My condolences to the family and especially to Norma. I used to ride the school bus with Dave, Norma and Larry. I used to see Dave once in a while at spaghetti night at the West Fargo VFW several years ago.
I am sure going to miss Dave and our conversations at the VA about his grandchildren. He loved sharing photos of his family.
