Delon Cahoon, 75, Arthur, ND, died December 17, 2024 in Sanford Hospital, surrounded by family.

Delon was born on October 19, 1949, in Hazen, ND, to Orville and Alvina Cahoon. A 1967 graduate of Stanton High School, he went on to study engineering at NDSU. In 1971, he married Cynthia Gardner, and together they had five children before parting ways in 1988. Delon married Julie Nelson in 1998 and together they proudly blended their families, raising ten children in a supportive and loving home.

In the beginning of his career, Delon owned and operated Cahoon Construction and Excavating. Later became a Supervisor for Olaf Anderson Construction. Delon used his engineering skills to shape the Red River Valley, building grain bins, shops, and houses as a contractor and supervising commercial buildings (Scheels Arena, Cardinal Glass, Ralph Engelstad Arena, etc.) He retired from Olaf Anderson, started working at Arthur Companies and also bought the iconic Johnson’s Barn, renaming it Arthur’s Barn. The barn burned down in 2017 and he rebuilt the barn to be what it is today.

Delon was a hard-working man who could fix or build most anything. But he really enjoyed watching the youth find joy in dancing. Delon liked to keep busy and especially enjoyed his projects when sharing them with his children. Family time was important.

Delon is survived by his wife, Julie, (Arthur, ND); children, Shawn (Shellie Wambach) Cahoon, Park Rapids, Minn.; Amy Cahoon, Casselton, ND; Elissa (Barry) Berndt, Erie, ND; Erica Cahoon, Tower City, ND; Darren Cahoon, Mapleton, ND; Heather Heick, Gwinner, ND; Tiffanie (Kevin) Honeyman, Fargo, ND; Stephanie Schmidt, Duluth, Minn.; Stacy (Colter) Riedel; Aitkin, Minn.; Natalie (Jesse) Thompson, Barnesville, Minn.; grandchildren: Nathan, Emily, Kaitlyn, Jaden, Lilly, Wyatt; James, Austin, Rayna; Dylan; Taylor, Zach, Hunter, Hailey, Layne; Jordan, Drue, Isabelle; Mikhail, Brooklyn; Keggan, Abrahm, Jackson, Bowen; Kobi, Kamryn, Emma, Kai; two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Genesis; sisters, Peggy McClure, Lochbuie, Colo., Irene (Marvin) Richter, Hazen, ND; brother, Dennis (Sue) Cahoon, Hazen, ND; and six nieces and nephews.

  10. I am so saddened by the passing of Delon. All of us nurses at Roger Maris Infusion loved Delon. He was a favorite of ours. He was always so sweet and kind. I loved hearing stories of the barn and Charlie!! He will be missed. I am sorry to his family for having to watch Delon slip away. He certainly gave it his toughest fight. I pray your hearts are able to start to heal and find comfort. My deepest condolences to all of Delon’s family.
