Devendra Prasad Varma, 89, Fargo, ND passed away on February 11, 2013 at Sanford Health in Fargo. He was born on July 15, 1923 to Radhika (Devi) and Tarini Prasad Varma in Patna, Bihar, India. He was married to Bimal Varma until her passing in 1990. He grew up in Arrah and worked in BISCOMAUN as Secretary dealing with agricultural products. In 1969, under USAID, he was part of an exchange program where he visited all over the United States, Hong Kong, Philippines, and South Korea, going over the agricultural advancement in these countries. He retired in 1981 and was involved in various philanthropic work until 1994. Since 2007, he resided in Fargo.
He was respected and liked by many and led a very disciplined life. He was a role model of how to live life independently with a positive outlook.
He is survived by his son, Amiy Varma; daughter, Ragini Varma; older brother; daughter-in-law, Jaya; son-in-law, Bhupinder S. Juneja; and two grandsons, Ashish and Anurag.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bimal; and two children, Mukti and Supriy.

I will miss you Gopal kaka.
I cannot forget the smiling face of Gopal kaka! When we were kids, he use to always come with sweets in his pocket! He was always immaculately dressed and his shoes were always well polished!! He use to teach us how shoes were polished!
In his younger days,as narrated by Sohan chacha, he was very popular with the kids at Bhaluhipur,Arrah.(ancestral place).
My memory of him is of Patna days and he use to come home on every festival/ occasion.

Delhi DelhiIt was one those cold September evenings of 1993. I had just joined ND
SU as a freshman into the college of engineering and had decided to take walk down the sidewalk from Churchill Hall past the Presidents House. When I ran into a person with a pleasant appearance and a smile on his face. He was well bundled up in warm clothes and introduced himself and asked me if I was also from India. I told him yes, and we ended up walking the length of the sidewalk. I really enjoyed walking with this gentleman as he spoke only good kind warm words. He was filled with word for the wise and gave me and eye opener for dealing with college life in US.
As the conversation neared the end, this nice gentleman gave me a Butterscotch candy and asked me to meet him from time to time in the different Indian or Asian Students get togethers. During this time I hadn’t met Ragini, but when I was once relating this person to her, she said, you must have met my father, we had a good laugh about the butterscotch candy. But, I still remember his advise and his candy.
