Don Wamstad, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Don Carroll Wamstad was born on April 21, 1951, in Mayville, ND, the son of Palmer and Inez (Ness) Wamstad. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton, ND, and attended and graduated from Hatton High School in 1969. Following high school, he attended NDSU and enlisted in the Army National Guard. Following his time at NDSU, Don moved home to operate Hatton Granite Company.

Don found his wife, best friend, and business partner, in Nicki Owen. They were married on March 22, 1975, at Little Forks Lutheran Church, near Hatton. As a team, they took over ownership of Hatton Granite Company in 1977. They went on to welcome three amazing children – Kallie, Blake and Haley. Don and Nicki worked together at Hatton Granite until Don’s passing.

Don loved his work at Hatton Granite Company and took great pride in creating meaningful memorials, for all his customers, many of whom have become friends. He and his wife, Nicki worked very hard, side by side for many years, building the Hatton Granite business into what it is today.

Don enjoyed the Hatton Granite bowling team during winter months, shopping for cars and trucks, and the newest John Deere tractors. He loved playing cards and shaking dice with his grandkids. Don looked forward to warm winter months in Florida with Nicki and visits to Disney World, and loved when his children and grandchildren would come for a visit.

Don and Nicki loved to travel and be spontaneous. They made many wonderful memories traveling the country with their children as well as their grandchildren. Don’s laugh, his mischievous smile, his humor, his wisdom, and his love, will be missed each and every day.

Don is survived by his wife, Nicki, of Hatton; his children – Kallie (Ben) Naastad, of Hatton; Blake (Jill) Wamstad, of Hatton; and Haley (Chris) Griffin, of Grand Forks; his grandchildren – Rylan and Brekyn Wamstad, Natalie and Noah Naastad, Brooklyn, Kinsley, and grandbaby #7 Griffin. 10. Dear Nicki and family! My heartfelt condolences in the sudden loss of Don! I am saddened and please know that my thoughts and prayers have been with you all at this difficult time! I was grateful that I was able to watch the entire funeral service on line and so appreciated that! It was a very nice funeral service! The entire funeral incorporated contents from my class and seminars I have taught to thousands of people over the years in stress management! ” yesterday is history, water under the bridge never to return again, it is a cancelled check, tomorrow is a mystery and a promissory note if we get it, today is cash so spend wisely and enjoy it! That is why it is called the present! Relish the moment! Today is a day the Lord has made so rejoice and be glad in it! “Life offers no guarantees and no warranties!” I vividly remember Don’s smile and good sense of humor and yes he enjoyed my vintage Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz over the years and always said ” you must hang onto that one” I am glad he did not have to suffer a lingering death! Don had ever right to proud of all of his family members and their successful achievements! My best! Hugs Uncle LYNN
